It began as East Alabama Male College, which was chartered in 1856 and opened its doors in 1859 as a private liberal arts institution. The University's mission is defined by it’s land grant traditions of service and access. It serves the citizens of the State through it’s instructional, research and outreach programs and prepare Alabamians to respond successfully to the challenges of a global economy. The University recognizes the importance of promoting an inclusive and diverse environment that supports.
