The University of Sheffield developed from three local institutions the Sheffield School of Medicine, Firth College and the Sheffield Technical School. The School of Medicine, founded 1828, was by far the oldest. Its early history was very insecure and it was saved from collapse by the opening of Firth College, which took over the teaching of all basic science subjects to medical students.

Today, Sheffield is a research university with a global reputation for excellence. It is a member of the Russell Group, one of the 24 leading UK universities for research and teaching. The university provides numerous undergraduate and postgraduate courses which meets each student expectations and leverages their global career.

A major city with a strong sense of community with a cultural centre on the edge of the Peak District national park, Sheffield is a special place, a city that leaves its mark. Its landscape, people and culture will influence students more than they can ever imagine. With nearly 70 venues in Sheffield, students will be able to find gigs by local and international acts nearly every day of the week. Venues include the legendary likes of the Leadmill and the art deco City Hall.
