About James Madison University

In 1907, the citizens of Harrisonburg, a rural city two hours south of Washington DC, campaigned vigorously to bring a new Normal School to the region. Their ultimate success gave birth to an institution that would claim a century with innovative, forward-thinking educators and legions of students eager to make the status quo obsolete. In 1908 the Madison began — and it has not stopped or slowed down since. The mission of the CGE is to broaden worldviews and promote global understanding for the JMU community by cultivating, facilitating, and supporting global engagement at home and abroad. The vision of CGE is to make global experiences – at home and abroad – attainable for all of the JMU community. Engaged learning happens everywhere at JMU. Every discussion. Every lab. Every study group. Every team project. Every interaction with a professor. Their professors aren't just transmitting content. Their professors place you in situations where you will develop an understanding of processes and complexities. This makes you better. And making you better sets the table to make the world better. The Center for Global Engagement is committed to the principle that international experiences and perspectives are essential to any undergraduate and graduate education. To that end, they promote and encourage a critical awareness of world issues, a knowledge of and an appreciation for other cultures, languages, and belief systems, a sense of global community, and a commitment to engagement at the international level, that they may educate active and responsible global citizens. They are a community committed to preparing students to be educated and enlightened citizens who lead productive and meaningful lives.
