Memorial University of Newfoundland
As Newfoundland and Labrador’s only university, Memorial has a special obligation to the people of this province. Established as a memorial to the Newfoundlanders who lost their lives during active service in the First World War and subsequent conflicts, Memorial University serves to honour that great sacrifice through educating the people of this province.
At Memorial University more than 18,000 students from over 100 countries come together to discover. From the classics to advanced technology, Memorial offers certificate, diploma, undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programs across four campuses and online. A global network of more than 90,000 accomplished alumni throughout the world strengthens Memorial University’s capacity and reputation for leadership in research, teaching and public engagement.
Offering more than 100 degree programs, Memorial University is one of the largest universities in Atlantic Canada. Memorial offers a number of unique programs including: The only co-op program in Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering in the world, Canada’s first MBA in social enterprise and entrepreneurship, the only Anglophone university in Canada to offer comprehensive folklore programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels and etc.
Memorial’s faculties have been recognized with numerous awards and honours for their meaningful contributions to society. The Arctic Inspiration Prize, SSHRC Impact Awards (including Gold Medal and Insight Award), Governor General’s Innovation Award (2018 and 2019), and the UN’s Climate Solution Award are just a few of the national and international accolades that demonstrate Memorial’s place as a global research university.
Academics are half the story. There is a wide range of services available as students complete their journey at Memorial. Students on campus at Grenfell, the Marine Institute and St. John's are supported by counselling and career services, health and wellness programs, academic advising and access to recreation facilities. The student life experience is rich with opportunities to participate in the campus community.
As one of the top 20 research universities in Canada, Memorial has more than 30 research centres and received more than CAD 100 million in research funding in 2016-17. Memorial and its funding partners have long believed in investing in talented students and we’re proud to say we have more than 1,500 graduate fellowships and 854 PhD students.
The province's capital city, St. John's, is home to the St. John's campus which offers a full range of academic programs in a modern, urban setting. Its largest campus is home to teaching and research facilities for Memorial's six faculties and six schools and serves as the university's administrative hub. Grenfell Campus, located in Corner Brook on the scenic west coast of the island, is a liberal arts and science campus specializing in environmental and fine arts programs. Also located in St. John's is the Marine Institute, Canada's leading centre of fisheries and marine training and one of the largest marine educational facilities in the world.
