Chartered in 1895, Northern Illinois University first opened its doors as the Northern Illinois State Normal School in 1899 as a teachers' school. Within NIU's seven colleges, students have the choice of over one hundred courses of study. The university offer 56 majors with 90 emphases, 73 minors and seven pre-professional programs. It offers the life-changing opportunities through internships, research, student organizations, and more.
