Nassau Community College opened in 1960 as part of the State University of New York (SUNY). Nassau, the largest single-campus community college in the state, is the first choice for one of every five college-bound high school graduates in Nassau County. Created in 1959 as part of the State University of New York (SUNY), Nassau first held classes in a wing of the old Nassau County Courthouse in Mineola, New York. When they opened in 1960, just 632 students took advantage of their affordable, high-quality academic programs. In 1962, they expanded to 135 acres at the former Mitchel Air Force Base and enrolment soared.

Their faculty hold doctorates at twice the national rate for community colleges. More of their faculty have received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching than any other community college in the state. They are the largest single-campus community college in the state of New York. Accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and is authorized by the Board of Regents to award two-year associate degrees in arts (AA), science (AS), and applied science(AAS).Nassau Community College, a constituent member of the State University of New York system, is a comprehensive, full-opportunity institution of higher education.
