About SUNY Stony Brook University

Stony Brook University is one of America’s most dynamic public universities, a centre of academic excellence and an internationally recognized research institution that is changing the world. After less than 60 years of existence, it’s ranked among the top 100 universities in the nation. Stony Brook University was established in 1957 as a college for the preparation of secondary school teachers of mathematics and science. The first campus was located in Oyster Bay, Long Island, on the grounds of a former Gold Coast estate. In 1962, a new campus was built near the historic village of Stony Brook on land donated by local philanthropist Ward Melville. Part of the State University of New York system, the University has grown tremendously and is now recognized as one of the nation’s important centres of learning and scholarship — carrying out the mandate given by the State Board of Regents in 1960 to become a university that would “stand with the finest in the country.” The University campus lies about 60 miles east of Manhattan and 60 miles west of Montauk Point. It is only a short distance to the Atlantic beaches of the south shore and the vineyards of the East End. Situated on 1,039 acres on the north shore of Long Island, Stony Brook University is a four-season climate, tempered by proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound. More than 24,500 students are enrolled at Stony Brook during fall terms and more than 28,000 students enrol over the course of an entire calendar year. The Office of Institutional Research, Planning & Effectiveness maintains official statistics for the University, including enrolment history. Stony Brook is home to an exceptionally diverse student body of more than 25,700 high-achieving students — including more than 17,000 undergraduates — from nearly all 50 states and more than 150 countries.

The University is divided into 13 schools and colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the Graduate School, the School of Journalism, the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, the School of Professional Development, and the six health sciences schools: Dental Medicine, Health Technology and Management, Medicine, Nursing, Social Welfare, and the new School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Stony Brook University offers a world of possibilities, with more than 200 academic programs, exciting undergraduate research opportunities and an ideal location for learning on Long Island's North Shore — just 60 miles from New York City. Stony Brook University offers more than 200 undergraduate programs, more than 100 master’s programs and more than 40 doctoral programs. Innovative programs include a combined-degree fast-track MBA program and the award-winning Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URECA) program, which involves undergraduates in research in nearly every discipline. Stony Brook students have been awarded many Fulbright and Goldwater scholarships, and some have also received Truman and Churchill scholarships. Students in all disciplines have the opportunity to enrich their education by pursuing their academic interests in an overseas location while still earning credits toward their bachelor’s degree. Stony Brook also offers unique semester, academic year, and summer and winter programs in locations such as Italy, Jamaica, Kenya, Korea, Madagascar and Tanzania.
