Stony Brook University is one of America’s most dynamic public universities, a centre of academic excellence and an internationally recognized research institution that is changing the world. It was established in 1957 as a college for the preparation of secondary school teachers of mathematics and science. More than 24,500 students are enrolled at the university during fall terms and more than 28,000 students enrol over the course of an entire calendar year. Stony Brook is home to an exceptionally diverse student body of more than 25,700 high achieving students , including more than 17,000 undergraduates from nearly all 50 states and more than 150 countries.
The University is divided into 13 schools and colleges, and the six health sciences . Stony Brook University offers a world of possibilities, with more than 200 academic programs, exciting undergraduate research opportunities and an ideal location for learning on Long Island's North Shore . The University offers more than 200 undergraduate programs, more than 100 master’s programs and more than 40 doctoral programs. It offers unique semester, academic year, and summer and winter programs in locations such as Italy, Jamaica, Kenya, Korea, Madagascar and Tanzania.
The University campus lies about 60 miles east of Manhattan and 60 miles west of Montauk Point. It is only a short distance to the Atlantic beaches of the south shore and the vineyards of the East End. Situated on 1,039 acres on the north shore of Long Island, Stony Brook University is a four-season climate, tempered by proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound.
