About University of St Andrews

Founded in the fifteenth century, St Andrews is Scotland's first university and the third oldest in the English speaking world. Teaching began in the community of St Andrews in 1410 and the University was formally constituted by the issue of a papal bull in 1413. Today, the university offers a flexible degree structure based on student’s choice of subject specialism or research, creating an environment which nurtures inquisitive minds and a culture of shared learning. In the last 90 years, the University has conferred around 1000 honorary degrees. The University of St Andrews welcomes students from around the world. Approximately 30 per cent of their student population join them from overseas, with some 1,500 undergraduates representing more than 120 different nationalities. At St Andrews there are students from almost every state in the USA and province in Canada, representing around 15 per cent of the student population. Other students arrive from Japan, China, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Africa, India, the West Indies and even further afield.

There is a wide variety of study options and entry points for undergraduate study, from Honours and General degrees to Gateway and Foundation programmes. Many students choose St Andrews because of the flexible degree structure and modular system. Students typically study modules across a range of Schools during their years of sub-honours study. International students who wish to study at the University, but whose school-leaving qualifications are not recognised for application to undergraduate programmes, may take a Foundation programme in order to satisfy the entry requirements of their chosen degree. The University of St Andrews also offers a broad range of postgraduate studies, with more than 1,000 postgraduates currently studying in one of its four Faculties of Arts, Divinity, Medicine and Science. There is a range of scholarships available to students at St Andrews. The University also offers one-to-one appointments where students can discuss any career-related issue with one of their team of careers advisers who are professionally trained graduates from a variety of backgrounds.
