Established in 1965, and located on the former site of the Shingwauk Indian Residential School, Algoma has a special mission to provide cross-cultural learning between Indigenous communities and other communities in Northern Ontario.
Algoma University offers over 30 academic programs in a diverse range of fields and through three faculties: Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Humanities. Whether you are interested in Psychology or Visual Arts, Business School or Law & Justice, the university have a wide range of programming for everyone. Experiential learning (EL) engages students in hands-on experiences that connect theory to practice, and builds transferable skills highly sought after by employers. Faculty members at Algoma University are engaged in cutting-edge research that creates outstanding learning opportunities for students. Faculty research contributes to enhancing knowledge across the Humanities, Sciences and Social Sciences.
At Algoma U, students here have the opportunity to shape their own unique experience and become the person and scholar they want to be. Every Algoma U student’s experience is unique and filled with passion, conviction, knowledge, and understanding.
Events and programming are delivered to encourage student success and help promote and celebrate Anishinaabe culture on campus. Opportunities include the Gathering at the Rapids Pow Wow, Anishinaabe Speaker Series, sharing circles, ceremonial feasts/soup & bannock days, elders’/youth gatherings, a ceremonial arbour, visiting elders, two unique programs such as Anishinaabe Inendamowin and Anishinaabe Studies, the Anishinaabe Research Symposium, “Gdo Akiiminaan Ganawendandaan” (Taking Care of our Land) Symposium, and many more.
Algoma U’s main campus is located in Sault Ste. Marie, a city of 75,000 people in Northern Ontario. “The Soo”, as locals call it, has all the amenities of a big city – shopping, entertainment, sports teams, festivals, and cultural activities – but without the hassle of traffic. Classrooms, labs, residences, food, the gym, library, and more are all within a two-minute walk. Also, university offers customized programming in Timmins and Brampton, designed to meet the needs of the surrounding populations.
