Overview

Overview

Located in the vibrant Canadian city of Winnipeg, the International College of Manitoba (ICM) is a pathway college with a choice of programs aimed at providing students with a ‘soft landing' to living and studying in Canada. Its programs and support system are designed to help students as they make the transition to living in Canada.

Upon successful completion of the UTP Stage II program, students can progress to the second year of one of the many undergraduate degree courses at the University of Manitoba (U of M).

ICM is located on the U of M Fort Garry campus, about ten kilometers from downtown Winnipeg in the heartland of Canada. Known as the ''Gateway to the West'', Winnipeg plays a prominent role in the transportation, manufacturing, agriculture and finance which supports the North American continent, and its location makes it an ideal spot for discovering all that Canada has to offer.

Winnipeg is a modern cosmopolitan city with many exciting activities for students. There are shops, restaurants and a lively arts and theater scene, as well as renowned festivals of various kinds including culture, food and sport. There are wonderful lakes and vast open landscapes nearby and many outdoor activities to pursue throughout the year, from hiking and mountain biking to skiing and other snow sports. Winnipeg's skies are among the clearest in North America, and the city has some of the cleanest water in Canada.

Diversity is a celebrated part of Canadian society, and international students make up almost 20 percent of the university's student population, representing over 100 countries. Because ICM is located on the U of M campus, its students benefit from shared use of all the U of M facilities for the duration of their studies. ICM students are even able to join university clubs and societies, giving them opportunities to socialize beyond the walls of the classroom, and to ease the transition between secondary school and undergraduate study.

Department structure

Department structure

ICM offers a specialized University Transfer Program (UTP) at stages one and two, depending on the level of study achieved at the point of application.

Prospective ICM students who have completed Year 11 studies or equivalent will be enrolled at UTP stage one, which comprises eight pre-university level courses studied over two terms, bringing students up to Year 12 level, where they may then complete stage two of their chosen pathway.

Applicants who have completed Year 12 studies or equivalent will be entered directly at UTP stage two. This course comprises ten university level credits, studied over the course of three terms, and upon completion, students may apply to progress to the second year of their U of M undergraduate degree. There are six UTP stage two pathway routes for students at ICM:

  • UTP Stage 2: Agricultural and Food Science
  • UTP Stage 2: Arts
  • UTP Stage 2: Business
  • UTP Stage 2: Engineering
  • UTP Stage 2: Environment, Earth and Resources
  • UTP Stage 2: Science

Students have a huge range of undergraduate degree course options to choose from at U of M, based on their choice of UTP pathway. Additionally, students who undertake these preparatory courses will develop a toolbox of transferable skills which become an asset for them during their further studies and future career.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

ICM provides an alternative route to undergraduate study, and students from a wide range of academic and international backgrounds are encouraged to apply. There are different academic and English language entry requirements for UTP stages one and two, which prospective students must meet in order to gain admission into the UTP program.

For UTP stage one, the standard pre-requisite is successful completing of year 11 with the required grades. This includes, for example, three passes at General Certificate of Education (GCE) O-Level, with a grade of D or better, or completion of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Year One Diploma with at least 18 points.

For UTP stage two, the standard pre-requisite to entry is successful completion of year 12 or equivalent. This may include passes from two GCE A-Level subjects with a minimum of D grades, though two AS-Level subjects may be combined for one pass. For those using the IB, the pre-requisite is 22 points from six IB subjects, completed in one sitting.

Since international applicants may not be using either of these two assessment systems, the ICM website publishes a list of country-by-country grade level equivalents, where prospective students may find information required to complete their applications.

There are also admission requirements for English language proficiency, which are also published on the ICM's website. Applicants must demonstrate a level equivalent to an overall score of 5.5 on the IELTS academic test, with all band scores minimum of 5.0 for entry to the UTP stage one and two courses. There are several accepted assessment providers, and the college website provides a comparison list. Students coming from English speaking countries may be exempt from providing an English language test.
