London Brunel International College (LBIC) - Navitas UK

United Kingdom
Overview

Overview

London Brunel International College (LBIC) is a pathways college, located within Brunel University London (BUL) which offers a range of preparatory courses, providing a direct route to enrolment on a degree course at the university. Named after the famed Victorian engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the university is a world class institution with specialisations in Engineering, Business, and Health and Social Studies. LBIC has been in partnership with BUL since 2003 and, in this time, has helped thousands of students successfully progress to the degree course of their choice. Graduation from an LBIC pathway program guarantees entry to over 150 undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses at BUL.

The LBIC campus is situated in Uxbridge, a dynamic and rapidly developing suburb at the western perimeter of Greater London. It is a historic town with plenty to see and do. There are parks, cafes, restaurants, a cinema and modern shopping centres. Uxbridge offers a self-contained lifestyle, close to the English countryside and with a character of its own, yet only a 30-minute journey to central London via public transport. Residents get the best of both worlds, and with almost 15,000 students attending BUL representing a global learning community, the area is well set up to cater to the needs of its lively student population.

LBIC students share a campus and facilities with their university peers, and benefit from access to sports facilities and study resources, and can also participate in all the same clubs and societies as BUL students. Integration into the university lifestyle starts from day one and comes with the support and social inclusion which brings confidence in successfully transiting into their chosen degree course.

What's new

What's new

LBIC is going ahead with its 2020/21 teaching schedule as planned, but with a number of key health and safety measures in place to make sure there is a safe and supportive learning environment available for all students. The college is adopting a dual delivery approach in conjunction with BUL, where courses are delivered through a combination of online and face-to-face classes. These two delivery modes are available to all students and allows access to all parts of the course remotely or in person. This gives LBIC students the flexibility to continue their studies in a safe and consistent fashion, from anywhere in the world.

College facilities are open as usual, but with guidelines in place and social distancing throughout. Clear and concise information about many aspects of the college's COVID-19 response plan is available online through the college's website, with daily updates and support contact information provided. LBIC and its staff aim to be as supportive and responsive to its students changing needs as possible.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

LBIC's pathway programs are characterised by excellent teaching quality, and for opportunities its students are given to develop research skills and to gain practical experience by working alongside leading research teams. Students benefit from small class sizes, taught by highly qualified and experienced faculty staff, resulting in more contact time between students and staff and a more personalised learning environment.

Many of the faculty staff have taught and worked internationally and are able to communicate their expertise efficiently to students from all over the world. There is a vibrant international community at LBIC, and this is also reflected in the composition of their teaching staff.

Students have access to an online learning portal where they will receive regular feedback on their assessments and coursework from their tutors, as well as providing them with course content and information. Support can also be given from module tutors in preparation for progression onto undergraduate courses, and there is an online peer mentorship program to continue the learning community in a remote learning environment.

LBIC is transparent in its teaching aims and methodologies, and publishes its educational policies and procedures online, in an effort to continually improve the service.

Department structure

Department structure

There are over 100 undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered at BUL, and the academic structure of the university is organised into three colleges:

Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences
Business, Arts and Social Sciences
Health and Life Sciences

Beyond this, there are three major research institutes, which connect the university to the wider academic community, as well as serving as a source of funding for BUL's academic departments.

Energy Futures and Environment
Health and Societies
Materials and Manufacturing

The pathways courses at LBIC are designed to prepare its graduates for entry into a course within one of these colleges or research institutes. Each pathway course teaches a number of core modules which lays a foundation of pre-university level study from which graduates may progress into a more specific degree program at BUL. There are ten undergraduate pathways programs offered at LBIC:

Accountancy
Business
Computer Science
Design
Economics and Finance
Engineering
Humanities, Social Science and Education
Law
Life Sciences
Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences

Each program is completed over the duration of 2 semesters and, upon completion, guarantees direct entry into the first year of an undergraduate degree at BUL. There are three intake points throughout the academic year, so incoming students can tailor their point of entry to their needs.

There are also six postgraduate pathway programs in the following subject areas, completed over one semester which ensure entry to a master's course at BUL:

Business
Computer Science
Engineering and Design
English
Environmental Sciences
Law

In addition to course related modules, students develop a number of transferable skills that will benefit them through university and their career, such as communication, presentation skills and project management.
