It offers 14 co-ed residence halls on campus to give students a variety of convenient living options during their studies. The Living and Learning Community provides international students with an opportunity to live in dormitories with students who wish to practice their language skills with native speakers.

What's new

Remote and in-person ESL program

To support international students, SUNY New Paltz is offering a virtual seven-week English language program that can be taken online from any location this June. Students who wish to study intensive English, but cannot travel because of the pandemic, can save money and study alongside students worldwide through an accredited, high-quality English language program. Alternatively, SUNY New Paltz is offering the semester program in-person starting in August 2021.

No GRE required for Electrical Engineering or Computer Science

The MS Computer Science program at SUNY New Paltz has long waived the GRE for international applicants, and now the MS Electrical Engineering program has done so too. Students need only submit their applications with transcripts, references, essay, and language proficiency scores. The departments hope that this will help students during a difficult time by having one less exam to pay for and take. Students interested in either program can visit the Graduate Studies website to learn more.

Student Ambassadors

The Center for International Programs at SUNY New Paltz has a resource of a Student Ambassador online platform, powered by Unibuddy©. International applicants can now chat with current students online to ask them questions about life at New Paltz. They can also read their blogs to learn about their experiences and advice for new students. It's easier than ever to connect with other students, even before coming to campus.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

International students must meet the English language requirements to study at the university. Students can do this through an English language test or by completing the SUNY New Paltz Pathway Program.

The Haggerty English Language Program is ideal for prospective undergraduate and postgraduate students who meet the academic requirements, but not the English language requirements. Students are conditionally admitted to the university and undertake the intensive English course. Once students complete Level 4 Academic Purposes, they can begin their academic studies. Students can also earn credits towards their degree during their English studies.

The Haggerty English Language Program at SUNY New Paltz also partners with the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) to help their international applicants meet English language proficiency standards and enroll at the CIA.

Undergraduate students are not required to submit SAT scores for admission, but most postgraduate students will need a GRE/GMAT exam, except for MS Computer Science, MS Electrical Engineering, and Music Therapy. MBA students must score either 450 overall on the GMAT or 300 overall on the GRE. Students should check specific international admission requirements for their chosen course.

Scholarships & funding

SUNY New Paltz was named one of the best value colleges and universities in the U.S. by the Princeton Review. The institution also ranks as one of the top 100 best value colleges in the U.S. by Kiplinger's Personal Finance.


SUNY New Paltz has the #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship in place. The scholarship rewards promising international students who have a vision for enhancing their intercultural understanding. Two first-year undergraduate international students, starting in the August semester each year, are chosen to receive annual, renewable scholarships to cover 50 percent of their tuition fees. International students are encouraged to check the application process, deadlines, and eligibility.

Other scholarships are available for current undergraduate students to help fund their studies. For graduate students, financial awards from SUNY New Paltz include:

  • MS Electrical Engineering Fellowship
  • Master of Fine Art in-state tuition scholarships for all admitted students to the program

Students can access dormitory accommodation for all four years of their undergraduate studies. 14 on-campus residence halls provide convenient living options in a variety of different styles, such as corridor, suite-style, or special interest group housing.

Residence halls are co-ed and have several student-oriented facilities and services. These include laundry rooms, computer facilities, meeting and study lounges, and television lounges.

Living and Learning Communities are also available to live in. The East-West Living and Learning Community, and the Romance Language Living and Learning Community, are both co-curricular programs. These are sponsored by the Asian Studies Program, Center for International Programs, and Office of Residence Life, to nurture a residential character that strengthens educational goals. The communities provide domestic students studying foreign languages and international students with the opportunity to live together in a residence life setting.

Other facilities on Campus

SUNY New Paltz gives students access to excellent on-campus facilities, including the Student Union, library, fully-equipped gym, wellness center, dining halls, food courts, counselling center, health center, bookstore, museum, theatre, fine arts center, and much more for students to have an entertaining and comfortable stay at the university.

The new Engineering Innovation Hub opened in Fall 2019. It's home to the Hudson Valley Additive Manufacturing Center which provides expert advice on 3D printing processes along with materials and designing for additive manufacturing for the SUNY New Paltz and the Hudson Valley business community. The collection of 3D printers constitutes some of the most advanced technology at any academic lab in the country and is available for the campus and wider community to use.

Student support

Student support

International students can access a variety of support services, including welcome programs and buddy systems.

The university aims to make students feel instantly at home and help them through all parts of their student journey. From the start of the process when students are considering applying, staff are available to answer any questions by email, web-chat, WeChat, WhatsApp, Line, or KakaoTalk.

Pick-up is also available for students arriving at JFK airport, with staff and students in the terminal to welcome them to New York. Once at the university, students attend orientation events that help them quickly transition into the new setting.

English language learners can be paired with conversation partners and host families to practice their English skills. They'll be able to make lots of American friends and enjoy a wide variety of cultural programs that are offered throughout their studies.
