Overview

One of the oldest higher education providers in the UK, The University of Chester offers over 200 degree programmes with a focus on practical learning.

Located across seven sites in Chester, Shrewsbury and Warrington, the university provides a range of courses, including single and combined honour's programmes in a vibrant, safe environment.

Its diverse student community is made up of 15,000 students from 130 countries across the world.

Based on the reviews of 41,000 students across 150 institutions, the university was ranked second-best in the UK for international students at the 2020 Whatuni Student Choice Awards.

Student prospects are enhanced by practical courses, industry placements and overseas opportunities which can last between five weeks and one year. Equipped with the skills and knowledge required for the workplace, 90.4 per cent of its students are employed or in further study upon graduation.

The city of Chester is a modern, cultural, and compact place to live, welcoming over eight million tourists every year. One of eight world-famous British Heritage cities, students are surrounded by fascinating history and beautiful architecture, including ancient Roman walls, the cathedral, Eastgate clock, and a Roman amphitheatre. On the outskirts of the city, students can visit the world-famous Chester Zoo and Cheshire Oaks, the largest retail outlet in the UK.

The city has received several awards including:

  • Safest city-based university in North West England (Complete University Guide 2019)
  • Top 10 city in the UK (The Telegraph 2018)
  • Second most student-friendly city in the UK (The Sun 2019)

Ideally placed in the North West of England, students are less than an hour away from Manchester and Liverpool. Both London and the beautiful Welsh coast and mountains are also just two hours away by train.

University ranked second-best for international students

In July 2020, based on the reviews of 41,000 students across 150 institutions, the University of Chester was voted second-best UK University for international students at the Whatuni Student Choice Awards.

Chat with current students

The University of Chester's Ask a Student tool allows prospective students to chat with university ambassadors and ask questions about living and studying in Chester. A supportive feature on the university's website, 30 ambassadors from across the world have answered over 2,000 questions since the tool's launch in 2019.

University of Chester's postgraduate research recognised

The Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) has recognised The University of Chester as one of its top ten UK universities for postgraduate students. The university received this accolade for two years in a row.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

The University of Chester is split into seven faculties that provide quality teaching in a variety of academic disciplines. The faculties are:

  • Faculty of Arts and Humanities
  • Chester Business School
  • Education and Children's Services
  • Health and Social Care
  • Medicine, Dentistry and Life Sciences
  • Science and Engineering
  • Social Science

The university continually invests in its infrastructure, and students are taught using state-of-the-art facilities in specialist sites. With highly experienced academics in each faculty, nine of the university's subject areas are ranked in the top ten in the UK for teaching quality (The Times Good University Guide 2020).

Student safety

Student safety

The University of Chester is committed to ensuring that students feel safe during their studies. The university has numerous services, procedures, and interventions in place to ensure its community is safe and secure.

One of the university's initiatives is a dedicated team of porters who provide 24-hour security services every day of the year. Other safety measures include:

  • On-call residential tutors and senior staff for students in university accommodation
  • Community liaison between students and residents
  • An antisocial behaviour unit

Both the university and the city of Chester has a reputation for being both welcoming and safe. Committed to providing a secure environment for visitors, students and residents, Chester was ranked as the safest city-based university in the North West of England by the Complete University Guide in 2019.

Graduate employment rate

Graduate employment rate

An impressive 90.4 per cent of the university's students are employed or continuing studies upon graduation.

The University of Chester's courses have an emphasis on practical learning, and most undergraduate degrees include a work-based learning module in the second year. This additional module includes a five-week placement at a professional organisation, lasting between five weeks and one year.

Student's employment prospects are further enhanced by opportunities to conduct industry placements and study abroad. Students on selected business courses can also register for a four-year course, which includes a one-year work placement.

The Chester Difference Award is the university's employability award. It recognises students who participate in extra-curricular activities whilst they study and is beneficial for their future.

After graduation, students have access to the university's Careers and Employability services for up to two years. Helping graduates start their careers, its areas of support include:

  • Application assistance
  • Careers workshops
  • CV writing help
  • Employer Masterclasses (delivered by employers)
  • Interview practice
  • One-to-one career planning sessions

Graduates can also access the CareersHub, which lists the latest vacancies, for two years after graduation.

Student support

Student support

International students have access to outstanding support services during their time at the University of Chester.

Right from arrival in the UK, the international arrivals team provides an airport pickup service and arranges welcome programmes specifically for international students. Helping new students settle in, the team provide a range of advice, including setting up a UK bank account, registering with a doctor, Tier 4 visas and more.

Further support is provided by the university's award-winning Student Futures Support and Development team. Its expert services include counselling, disability support and peer mentoring.

The University of Chester's Students' Union (CSU) also plays a key role in student support. Working closely with university staff, CSU represents students and ensures their voices are heard. The students' union also runs a range of societies and sports clubs, everything from debating and drama to gaming and Star Wars. These provide students with great opportunities to make friends and feel at home.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

Tuition fees for international students will vary depending on the level of study. International fees for entry in September 2021 include:
  • International foundation programme – GBP 9,250

  • Undergraduate course – GBP 12,750

  • Postgraduate course – GBP 12,950

  • MBA – GBP 13,250

  • Research degrees (classroom based) - GBP 13,308

  • Research degrees (lab based) – GBP 17,142

To help with fees and additional costs, international students can apply for several scholarships. This includes:
  • International Scholarships: An international and merit-based scholarship, recipients are given a significant reduction in tuition fees. International applicants for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses are eligible to apply.

  • GBP 250 early payment award: A discount awarded to self-funded students who pay the full fees before their enrolment.

  • International Alumni Scholarship: International students who graduated at bachelor's degree level at the University of Chester can study a master's programme for just GBP 7,450, a saving of GBP 5,500. Terms and conditions apply.
