East Tennessee State University
East Tennessee State officially became a college in 1925 when it changed its name to East Tennessee State Teachers College, subsequently gaining accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1927. In 1943, East Tennessee State Teachers College was expanded into a college with a range of liberal arts offerings, becoming East Tennessee State College. The college became a University in 1963, adopting the name it holds today. More than 400 international students from over 65 countries have found their place here studying diverse topics in everything from art, biology, and criminal justice to public health, storytelling, and technology. ETSU pursues its mission through a student-centred community of learning reflecting high standards and promoting a balance of liberal arts and professional preparation, continuous improvement, and based on core values where People come first, are treated with dignity and respect, and are encouraged to achieve their full potential, RELATIONSHIPS are built on honesty, integrity, and trust, DIVERSITY of people and thought is respected, EXCELLENCE is achieved through teamwork, leadership, creativity, and a strong work ethic, EFFICIENCY is achieved through wise use of human and financial resources, and COMMITMENT to intellectual achievement is embraced.
East Tennessee State University prepares students to become productive, enlightened citizens who actively serve their communities and the world. Education is the university’s highest priority, and the institution is committed to increasing the level of educational attainment in the state and region. The university conducts a wide array of educational and research programs and clinical services and is the only Academic Health Sciences Center in the Tennessee Board of Regents System. Through research, creative activity and public service ETSU advances the cultural, intellectual and economic development of the region and the world. ETSU houses 11 colleges and schools offering some 140 degree programs in the arts and sciences, business and technology, education, and the health sciences, including numerous honors enrichment opportunities for undergraduate students. One of the greatest things about ETSU is surely its location. ETSU is located in the foothills of the rolling Appalachian Mountains of Northeast Tennessee. The area is home to what is known as the tri-cities, made up of Johnson City, Kingsport, and Bristol. Johnson City, Tennessee has something to offer everyone and appeal to many interests you might have. There are numerous restaurants, music venues, multi-screen digital cinemas, a thriving Community Theatre, and a number of festivals to fill your nights out on the town. Johnson City ranked 5th in Kiplinger’s 10 Least-Expensive Cities for Living in the U.S.A, so you can enjoy the city life without breaking the bank. They would love to show you their beautiful campus, which spans over 350 acres and contains a certified Arboretum. There are more than 60 academic and administrative buildings, and approximately 3 million gross square feet of space, with network access available in every classroom, office, residence hall and building. Wifi access is established throughout the campus, so you can stay connected indoors and out.
