What's new

What's new

The University of Queensland launched a makerspace of world-class standards, placing this top 50-university at the forefront of hands-on education in the country.

The new makerspace facilities, UQ Innovate, are the largest of its kind in the country. The space features a 1200 square metre workshop with advanced prototyping and manufacturing machines and tools. Some equipment include 3D printers, vacuum formers, waterjet cutters, and industrial robots.

Professor Vicki Chen, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology said that these new facilities would give students at UQ a competitive edge over others while entering the job market.

“One of our main roles as a university is to give our students the confidence and capability to embrace the challenges of a changing world. With the launch of UQ Innovate, we are in a much stronger position to fuel their curiosity, so they can drive sustainable solutions at the cutting edge, today and tomorrow,” he added.

Design and build teams from UQ Racing and UQ Space teams have used the university’s expertise and facilities to produce competitive rockets and race cars on a national level.

Myrthe Snoeks, Managing Director of UQ Space and engineering and arts student said that her team was able to accomplish a lot in the past year owing to UQ’s facilities and support, including becoming a winner of the 2019 Australian University Rocket Competition, which will be strengthened with the addition of the new makerspace.

Myrthe also said, “With the launch of these new facilities, we have the tools we need to tackle even more exciting and challenging projects, with the aim to go further than any Australian university team has gone before.”
