UNC Charlotte is a Doctoral and Research Intensive institution (reclassified in 2000 by the UNC Board of Governors), and has the largest research library in the Southern Piedmont region with more than one million volumes. UNC Charlotte's first emphasis is on teaching, followed by applied research and responsive public service. UNC Charlotte is the largest institution of higher education in the Charlotte region and the fourth largest of 16 constituent members of the University of North Carolina. They provide a pioneering learning experience that prepares graduates to become active citizens of the world. They are frequently recognized for their contributions to higher education, and for their outstanding faculty and the leadership role it plays in the region. They're proud of the many programs and services they offer on and off campus to support students by fostering a fundamental understanding of diversity and community. With accreditation from the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, UNC Charlotte offers 7 colleges. They have 78 programs leading to Bachelor's degrees, 63 programs leading to Master's degrees and 23 programs leading to Doctoral degrees.
