Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Worcester Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1865 to create and convey the latest science and engineering knowledge in ways that are most beneficial to society. Today, WPI holds firm to its founding mission to provide an education that balances theory with practice, a philosophy symbolized by the towers of their two original buildings, pictured above. WPI was among the first universities in the United States to incorporate project-based learning in its undergraduate curriculum, requiring students to apply their acquired skills, knowledge, and abilities to develop solutions for real-world problems. Now WPI is helping other colleges and universities implement experiential learning in their own curricula.
WPI's 14 academic departments offer more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in science, engineering, technology, business, the social sciences, and the humanities and arts, leading to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. Graduate research programs include robotics, materials science, cyber security, and learning sciences and technology. WPI invests in research in critical areas, seeking solutions to important and socially relevant problems in such diverse fields as fire protection engineering, life sciences and bioengineering, energy and data science. In an atmosphere that embraces cultural diversity and encourages social tolerance, the International House at WPI provides programs and services to assist, educate, and support international students and scholars in their transition to U.S. society and academic culture. To ensure student, scholar, and institutional compliance with federal regulations, the International House provides professional expertise on immigration and employment issues while also promoting the academic, professional, and personal growth of international students and scholars.
At WPI learning has always been about combining theory and practice. WPI graduates emerge ready to take on critical challenges in science and technology, knowing how their work can impact society and improve the quality of life. WPI's academic departments offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs in science, engineering, technology, business and management, the social sciences, and the humanities and arts, leading to the BA, BS, MS, ME, MBA and PhD. Their world-class faculty is both renowned and accomplished--and they are accessible, priding themselves on the quality time they invest in their students. WPI is located in the heart of Worcester, New England’s second largest city, about 40 miles west of Boston. With more than 38,000 students on 9 campuses, Worcester offers the charm and ease of a college town with the convenience of urban living—including a lively cultural scene, world-class restaurants, close-knit neighbourhoods, beautiful parks, affordable cost of living, quality public schools, and easy access to area transportation. It’s easy to get to—and around—Worcester. WPI’s campus is 1.5 miles from the historic and beautifully restored Union Station, a major transportation hub offering bus, train, and commuter rail options. The city’s convenient location in central Massachusetts provides easy highway access to Boston, Providence, and Hartford.
