The Wellington Institute of Technology or WelTec is a public New Zealand polytechnic based in Petone. WelTec was formed by an amalgamation between the Central Institute of Technology and the Hutt Valley Polytechnic in 2001. Hutt Valley Polytechnic was established in 1904 WelTec offers over 140 courses in disciplines ranging from hospitality, business, information technology, visual arts, counselling, engineering and construction.

WelTec certificates, diplomas, degrees and graduate diplomas are NZQA accredited and, with City and Guilds and other international qualifications on offer students qualifications that are well recognised – both here and abroad. Teaching staff have lots of industry experience and specialist knowledge in their subject areas. WelTec empowers students to achieve, with a range of support services ranging from academic and learning support to financial, cultural and personal support.
WelTec offers a great range of Certificate programmes which are a 'staircase' into higher-level diplomas and degrees. Stair casing enables students to gain entry into an area with a lower level of entry criteria and by achieving at the certificate level, students can often progress up to higher level qualifications. WelTec has a wide variety of Scholarships on offer. Students have to meet certain criteria, and be passionate and motivated about the area of study.
Student association operates primarily to serve student interests, providing representation, communication and advocacy. The Association also provides events, facilities, and sports equipment for student use. The Association operates independently from the institute offering student services not offered by WelTec.
Campus life :
WelTec's Petone Campus is just a block from the beautifully redeveloped Petone esplanade, about 15 minutes’ drive from Wellington's inner city. It is close to playing fields, the beach, and Wellington's beautiful harbour as well as a number of trendy shops and cafes.
Transportation options are wide and varied with several bus services operating close proximity to the main campus, along with a train only a few minutes’ walk away.
