With over 1,000 students representing more than seventy countries worldwide, Troy University truly upholds its title as Alabama's international university. It is a melting pot of cultures, ideas and experiences, offering a full spectrum of learning opportunities, both academic and extra-curricular.

Prospective students will find a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programs to choose from, spread over a wide range of subject areas, giving applicants freedom to pursue their specific interests, while living and working in a global learning community. Troy encourages and supports students from all over the world. Courses are most often taught in English, and an ESL accredited summer school is available to ensure that students are able to start their program with confidence. There are a number of scholarships available to both domestic and international students, as well as support options for online courses and people from military or family backgrounds.

The school is spread over four campuses. The main university campus is located in downtown Troy, and sits within a wonderfully landscaped site, furnished with pine and oak trees, walking trails and a small lagoon. Other features include an amphitheater and state-of-the-art sports facilities, which ensure that the university experience extends beyond the horizons of the courses provided. Troy has a vibrant social scene. There are free events on campus hosted by international student communities and sporting events are a major social attraction.

What's new

What's new

Troy University is benefiting from a number of recent investments including grants to improve training facilities in the nursing department, and to provide new digital design equipment for the upcoming academic year.

This fall, there will be a new series of classes teaching the skills required to enter the emerging world of 3D printing. 3D Printing for Art and Industry is an exciting new program which allows students to learn digital modelling and fabrication. This ensures that students at Troy are offered tuition which is up to date with the advancements in technology and industry. The course will include opportunities for internships with local businesses, augmenting experience and employability.

There are several new merit-based scholarship opportunities for the 2020 academic year, including an upgrade to the Millennium Scholar's Award, which provides tuition, housing and even a meal plan to freshman students who meet the required entry grades.

The university's acclaimed football team, the Troy Trojans, aim to play their homecoming game on the 24th October this fall. These sporting events are a fantastic way for new students to meet their classmates in a social environment, and as an introduction to American sporting culture.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

One of the most consistent testimonials given by those who have attended Troy University is the quality of its teaching staff. Troy's academic staff are highly qualified and experienced, yet it is their care and focus on connecting with the students which is often commented on. Free tutoring is available, and the university has a staff to student ratio of 15:1 which improves on the national average of 18:1. This allows for a more personal mentorship with the teaching staff, and brings a level of engagement which inspires students to reach their full potential.

Department structure

Department structure

There are five colleges at Troy University, each with a specialty focus on a particular area of education. Divided over four campus locations, Troy's educational facilities include the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Communication and Fine Arts, College of Education, College of Health and Human Service, and the Sorrell College of Business. These five institutions cater to more than 260 internationally recognized undergraduate and graduate programs, many of which have been credited by Princeton Review and the Military Times among others, as being among the best in the South East and the nation.

Key courses include business, psychology and criminal justice, and the university's Health and Human service department has leading facilities in nursing and education. In addition to this, Troy is known for its extremely successful online degree programs, which allow students to achieve accredited qualifications from a distance. Evening study courses are also offered, as part of the university's pledge to support working students and students with families.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

International students must complete an International Application, which includes an official copy of transcripts for education years ten to 12, and diploma. Other documentation includes a financial support statement, passport identification page, and certification of English proficiency. The entry requirements for English proficiency is an overall TOEFL test score of 61, or official IELTS test score 5.5 bands overall.

For those who do not meet these requirements, the university offers an accredited English language summer school to ensure that the minimum level is achieved before term begins. Throughout the year, Troy has an intensive English program with six levels, catering to students with various degrees of aptitude, and different schedules. Applicants from Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and several Caribbean nations do not need to submit proof of language proficiency.

For graduate admissions, the applicant must hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited university with a minimum GPA of 2.5, and must provide an official letter of recommendation.

Students may study at any of the four Troy University campuses in Alabama. The main campus is located in Troy, and the other three are located in Montgomery, Dothan and Phoenix respectively.

The main campus is set within a beautifully landscaped site, with grassy spaces, wide open footpaths and plenty of areas dedicated to refreshment and recreation. There are eleven halls of residence on the main campus, with various pricing tiers, ensuring students can affordably live and study within a short walk of their home.

The Trojan Center is the university hub, providing a number of amenities, including the university post office, food court, ballrooms, conference rooms, a fitness center, and theater. This is where the Student Union is based, and where the active social side of university life is most visible.

Troy provides a number of world-class sports and fitness facilities, including the recently completed Trojan Fitness Center. This USD 25 million facility boasts 78,000 square feet of indoor sports courts, aerobic exercise rooms, free and circuit weight training areas, a basketball court and an Olympic sized outdoor swimming pool. The university excels in giving its students the opportunity to get involved at any level of ability, to gain new skill sets and to engage with the wider student community in an active and competitive manner.

Students enjoy access to the many libraries of Troy University, which regularly host lectures, exhibitions and films. The physical libraries on the Montgomery, Dothan and Troy campuses have a combined collection of over 320,000 bound volumes, and access to over 200 digital databases, granting full access to books, journals, audio-visual resources.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

The university provides a range of supportive scholarship opportunities. Eligibility for these scholarships is often merit-based, with GPA requirements, but there are also options for funding based on geographic location, essay-writing abilities, excellence in music and performance, or specific study areas. Troy University has a generous network of donors and sponsors who support these schemes, allowing more people access to attend higher education.

The university offers a multitude of scholarships at the undergraduate and graduate level. Undergraduate students with a GPA of 3.7 or above are eligible for free tuition and accommodation, and there are also a number of program specific awards available, including the Sorrell Scholars Award, which is given to students of accounting, economics, or global business. This is given in the form of an endorsement ranging between USD 1,500 to USD 3,000 for the academic year, and recipients serve as student ambassadors for this time.

At a graduate level, international students holding unconditional offers may apply for an International Scholarship, provided a minimum enrollment of nine hours per semester, and that a 3.10 cumulative grade is maintained. This waives the out-of-state tuition fees, and provides the student with a stipend of USD 7,500 annually. In addition to these, there are many other scholarships and funding support schemes for online students and students with families.
