Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) has a rich cultural history and traces its roots all the way back to 1823 where it was initially the Liverpool Mechanics and Apprentices Library. Now, it takes pride in being a modern, civic university that offers degrees informed by internationally acclaimed research and centred around industry standard learning.

What's new

  • To encourage ambitious students and help them to realise their potential, LJMU is offering scholarships worth up to GBP 4,000 for 2023 entry. These scholarships will be awarded based upon self-funded students achieving all conditions of their offer and country of origin.
  • LJMU is launching a Climate Action Plan to set out crucial goals over the next 10 years in the fight against the climate crisis. In 2020, LJMU developed the UK's first bachelor's degree in Climate Change and is committed to educating the next generation in finding sustainable solutions to the world's industrial challenges. As part of their pledge to encourage global change, LJMU's Screen School presented films to the UN's Climate Change Conference, COP26, discussing the catastrophic effects of rising sea levels on island communities.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

LJMU is the first university to receive two commended judgments by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA).

The panel noted that the majority of LJMU students have excellent graduate prospects, successfully entering work or further study within 15 months of graduation (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2017/18), and there are high levels of student satisfaction for assessment and academic support.

This high standard of education is across the board, with 129 of the courses at Liverpool John Moores University being ranked in the top 50 in the Guardian University League Tables 2020.

Department structure

Department structure

The university's academic structure is divided into five faculties:

Faculty of Arts, Professional and Social Studies

As an academically ambitious, research-driven faculty, it offers a diverse range of programmes to students from creative writing to law, and accounting to architecture. In the most recent research assessment (REF 2014), 37.3 per cent of its academics' research was rated as either world-leading or internationally excellent.

In the Guardian 2021 league table, the faculty's school of Art and Design was awarded top ten status in the country.

Faculty of Health

Students within the faculty receive a cutting-edge educational experience informed by its research, scholarship, and real-world experience, as all of its courses offer placement opportunities. The school offers sports courses ranked amongst the top 25 in the country (Complete University Guide 2022).

Faculty of Science

With world-class facilities and a passionate and innovative teaching and research team, the Faculty of Science's students are studying at the cutting-edge of their discipline. Strong links with the scientific community and industry in both the UK and overseas means that the faculty can offer fantastic placement opportunities so students can develop their skills and gain valuable experience in the real world.

Faculty of Engineering and Technology

The Faculty of Engineering and Technology conducts research in a wide variety of fields, from computing to maritime studies to product design. Undergraduates of the faculty have high-quality employment opportunities, and postgraduate students show high completion rates.

Faculty of Business and Law

The Faculty of Business and Law is innovative and nurtures talent, providing the knowledge, experience and contacts students need to succeed in their specialist areas. Whether that is within accounting, marketing, human resource management, public relations, events and tourism management, business or Law.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

English language qualifications

Students need to demonstrate their English language proficiency and are advised to check their online course information for detailed and up-to-date entry requirements for specific degrees.

All international applicants must have an internationally recognised English language qualification, such as the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS), Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic or TOEFL iBT. The English language qualification must have been certified within the last two years for verification purposes. LJMU will accept other English language tests providing students attain the appropriate level.

The undergraduate IELTS entry requirements are as follows:

  • International Foundation Programmes – Academic IELTS for UKVI overall 4.5 (min. 4.0 in writing)
  • Undergraduate degrees – 6.0 (minimum of 5.5 in each component)
  • The postgraduate IELTS entry requirements are as follows:
  1. Pre-master's programmes – 5.5
  2. Taught master's degrees – 6.0 to 7.0
  3. Research degrees (MPhil / PhD) – 6.5

Facilities

Facilities

The university is well-equipped across all of its disciplines, both the staff and students work with the latest technologies from sleep research equipment to virtual reality environments. With an investment of GBP 160 million, LJMU's buildings, facilities and ongoing plans ensure that it is set to continue conducting world-leading research.

LJMU's facilities are designed to replicate work environments so that students can gain the key skills and experience relevant to their chosen career. These include science, technology and engineering laboratories, broadcast quality TV and radio studios, a forensic scene-of-crime lab, a 360° ship simulator, theatre and rehearsal facilities, a mock courtroom, clinical practice suites, art galleries and much more.

New facilities in the School of Sport Studies, Leisure and Nutrition

GBP 35 million has recently been invested into top laboratory facilities for the school's current and future sport scientists. All of its labs are furnished with state-of-the-art equipment which enables the school to enhance the understanding of the science behind human performance and behaviour.

Purpose-built facilities in the School of Art and Design

The GBP 27 million John Lennon Art and Design Building was designed by leading architect Rick Mather and was awarded the RIBA award for Architecture. This iconic six-storey building offers purpose-built art and design facilities with seminar rooms, galleries, catering and exhibition space and roof terraces with spectacular city views.

Professional-standard facilities in the School of Nursing and Allied Health

The school has invested GBP 1.6 million in developing professional-standard clinical practice suites and enhanced teaching spaces.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

LJMU awards a range of international scholarships. These prestigious awards are available for international students applying for undergraduate courses and postgraduate taught programmes.

Undergraduate scholarships

International Achievement Scholarship international students will receive a GBP 3,000 partial tuition fee discount towards each year of their studies. This award is automatically granted to eligible students.

Sports Scholarship – helps talented students fulfil both their sporting and academic potential. More details on this scholarship on the LJMU International Undergraduate Scholarships page.

Postgraduate scholarships

International Achievement Scholarship international students will receive a GBP 3,000 partial tuition fee discount towards each year of their studies. This award is automatically granted to eligible students upon assessment of their initial university application and does not require a separate application.

Regional Scholarships international students from selected regions will be awarded up to a GBP 4,000 partial tuition fee discount towards each year of their studies. Eligible students from all other countries will qualify for International Achievement Scholarship.

This scholarship is automatically awarded to eligible students. Find more details on country scholarships on the LJMU website.

GREAT Scholarship 2023 – jointly funded competitive scholarship scheme by LJMU and the British Council. Offers GBP 10,000 towards tuition fees for one-year master's programmes to students from Kenya and Turkey. This scholarship is available to students applying to MSc Climate Change and requires a separate application. Information on how to apply will be available from November 2022.

External scholarships The university also accepts government-funded UK scholarships from the Chevening Sponsorship Programme and the British Council Women in STEM Scholarship Scheme, among others. Always check the university website for the most up to date schemes.
