One of the largest universities in the UK, Manchester Metropolitan University is a historic and internationally-recognised institution. With history dating back to 1824, it now houses a diverse campus with over 38,000 students from more than 140 different countries.

Manchester Metropolitan is known for its quality of teaching, receiving a silver rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2017, and its outstanding research, 85% of which is rated as world-leading or internationally excellent (REF 2014-2021).

It's School of Architecture is amongst the best in the world, ranked 9th by the QS World University Rankings 2019, and its Business School is amongst an elite group worldwide with an AACSB accreditation.

The University has a GBP 400 million investment planned to develop facilities, buildings and public spaces.

Manchester Metropolitan students are also able to benefit from plenty of employment support, such as careers advice for international students, CV checks, interview preparation and lifelong access to a digital careers service. The University also has industry links with global companies allowing students on specific courses to attend year-long placements with prestigious employers. 93% of Manchester Metropolitan students go into employment or further study within six months of graduation thanks to this support (16/17 DHLE).

What's new

New School of Digital Arts launching in 2021

Opening in 2021 at Manchester Metropolitan University, the School of Digital Arts (SODA) is a GBP 35 million investment that will help to develop the next generation of creative talent and support the growing demand for skilled workers in the region's creative, digital and tech sectors.

It will house more than 1,000 students annually with subjects that span film, animation, UX design, immersive technologies, photography, games design, AI and more, often working on live projects with industry partners. The state-of-the-art new building will feature a digital innovation lab, green screens, editing suites, screening space, a media gallery, sound and music studios and production studios.

Manchester Metropolitan ranked in the top 60 UK universities

Manchester Metropolitan has been ranked 56th in the Complete University Guide 2020 table. The result places Manchester Metropolitan 4th among the North West region's universities.

Teaching quality

Manchester Metropolitan provides students with high quality teaching in a friendly and supportive environment. Its excellent teaching quality has been recognised with a Teaching Excellence Framework Silver award.

The TEF Panel judged that Manchester Metropolitan delivers high-quality teaching, learning and outcomes for its students. It consistently exceeds rigorous national quality requirements for UK higher education.

Manchester Metropolitan's academic staff have strong links with industry partners across all subject areas, contributing their knowledge and experience to the design of courses and also giving specialist lectures and seminars to students.

The University has links with professional bodies and associations, including AACSB and ACCA, to ensure the content of its courses is up-to-date and relevant to industry.

The Research Excellence Framework measures the quality of research in UK universities. In the 2014 assessment, valid until 2021, the University saw a rise in 12 places in the quality rankings as a result (REF, 2017-2021).

Manchester Met academics develop research that directly influences degree programmes whilst helping solve major issues at local, national and international levels. Students are taught by experts in their subjects who, alongside teaching, could also be delivering business solutions or advising on major policy changes for governments.

Manchester Metropolitan offers a wide-range of foundation, undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research courses. All programmes are enriched by Manchester Metropolitan's extensive research activities and many have been developed in close partnership with businesses and industry professionals.

Other study options

Manchester Metropolitan University offers a range of courses to students at various levels.

Foundation courses are available to prepare students for university study, and to provide the level of knowledge needed to secure a place at Manchester Metropolitan University. There are several routes available to students who don't have the entry requirements for direct entry on to undergraduate or postgraduate programmes.

There is more than one Foundation Year route and also, the opportunity to take preparation courses that lead on to the second year of undergraduate and to postgraduate programmes.

Pre-sessional English courses and free English language support is available for international students still needing to meet the English language requirements of their chosen degree course. The five, ten and 20, 30 and 40 week intensive English programmes focus on improving language skills and preparing students for study in the UK, available at various start dates throughout the year.

The University has academic partnerships around the world. These include collaborative teaching partnerships where Manchester Metropolitan University degrees are delivered with local partners and student exchange agreements with over 150 partners all over the world and research collaborations.

Study abroad and exchange opportunities are available in Europe, Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico and the U.S.

How to apply

How to apply

Undergraduate application (Foundation Year and Undergraduate Study)

UCAS is the online application system that students must use to apply for undergraduate study. Manchester Metropolitan University's institution code is ‘M40'. Students should ensure that this code is entered clearly on their application form, together with the code for the course they wish to apply for.

Students should follow the below steps:

  • Complete the application form
  • Receive and accept their offer
  • Apply for accommodation
  • Pay a deposit amount that will be confirmed with the offer letter from the University and will be deducted from the student's total tuition fees
  • Complete the CAS Request Form
  • Apply for a visa

Postgraduate application

Students can apply online for most postgraduate taught courses. If the course, students are applying for does not have an online application option, they will need to complete the Postgraduate Application Form and submit it by email.

Standard supporting documents include:

  • Copies of academic transcripts and graduation certificates
  • Two references, one of which must be an academic reference
  • A personal statement
  • Evidence of English language proficiency

Some courses will have additional application requirements. There is no deadline for applications to postgraduate programmes, however students are advised to apply as early as possible to allow for processing of application and visa.

The University is undergoing a GBP 400 million major investment programme to develop its facilities, buildings and public spaces, and is ranked as one of the UK's greenest universities (People and Planet University League 2019).

Manchester Metropolitan University is located amongst world-renowned music, arts, shopping and sports venues and the second largest Chinatown in the UK. Some of Manchester Metropolitan's facilities include:

  • The University library, open 24 hours a day from September to June, has study zones with over one million books, journals and e-resources.
  • Over 4,000 PCs across campus
  • A full-sized mock courtroom, providing students with essential practical skills for a career in law
  • A Fashion Studio that is used for the production of garments from design through to development and manufacturing. The studio is equipped with CAD software, specialised sewing and joining machines and laser cutting equipment.
  • A multimedia studio that has high definition vision mixing, HD cameras, full audio, video recording facilities and a computer usability lab which captures and analyses human behaviour. There is also an animation suite, dedicated green screen room, lighting rigs and motion capture equipment.
  • Social areas that students can use to relax in, including the Students' Union Main Hall, Students' Union Cafe and Shop, Brooks Building Cafe, Strength and Conditioning Gym, Business School Atrium, Brooks Building Atrium, and many more.

Manchester Metropolitan offers guaranteed accommodation for international students for their first year of study (accommodation application required before August deadline, terms and conditions apply). All rooms are based in the city centre, close to where students study and near to local facilities.

Scholarships & funding

Manchester Metropolitan University is committed to recognising high-achieving students and has a comprehensive range of scholarships available of up to GBP 5,000. (The scholarship amount quoted relates to the 20-21 academic year and may change for the 2021-22 academic year).

Students' Union

The Manchester Metropolitan University Union represents the rights and interests of all of its students.

All Manchester Metropolitan students automatically become members of the Students' Union and enjoy access to a range of sports clubs, student societies, support services and facilities. With over 120 different sports clubs and societies, there's something for everyone.

The Students' Union is led by student officers elected by students. This ensures that they listen to the needs and views of all, helping students get the most out of their time at university. Manchester Metropolitan's Students' Union building is the place to socialise, work and relax. It has a cafe, shop and event space, social seating areas, meeting rooms and quiet study spaces.

Experienced, trained staff in the Advice Centre offer free specialist, student-centred advice on a whole range of subjects such as funding and personal finance, academic issues and accommodation. They help thousands of students with a wide range of issues.

Arrival support

International students receive arrival support with pre-departure webinars, a free airport pickup and a week of welcome events.

Pastoral support

Once at their accommodation, the Residential Life team have Residential Advisors providing students assistance through advice and support.

Having welcomed international students for many years, the university has developed several specialist teams to provide them with the right support throughout their studies:

  • Student Hub support staff can provide advice and support on student living, careers, studying and finance, immigration, and welfare.
  • The Immigration and Welfare team also provide confidential advice and guidance as well as organising regular workshops to help with renewing student visas.
  • The university Counselling Service allows students to talk to a professionally-qualified counsellor, about any personal problems and the team also runs workshops and courses.
