University of Newcastle's Q Building awarded world-leading 6 Star rating

The University of Newcastle's Q Building has become the first building in regional NSW to achieve a 6 Star Green Star ‘Design and As Built' certified rating.

A world-leading status, this is the highest rating awarded by Green Star, which is ''an internationally recognised rating system setting the standard for healthy, resilient, positive buildings and places'', founded by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) in 2003.

The certification confirms that the $25 million building, which opened in June as the first stage of the University's new Honeysuckle City Campus, is more than just a creative and entrepreneurial hub in the city – the School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Sciences (HCISS) and Integrated Innovation Network (I2N) call it home – it's a signpost and an aspiration for the University, the city and the region's sustainable future.

Q Building is expected to be officially opened later this year.

NUmates wins Excellence in Student Engagement award

A University of Newcastle program to engage international and domestic students through a range of activities has received a national award for Excellence in Student Engagement.

The University's NUmates program has been recognised for fostering an amazing student experience, at the tenth annual Association for Tertiary Education Management (ATEM) awards.

Determined to ensure students who couldn't return to their friends and families at the end of 2020 would be connected and supported, the team created a Summer Support campaign with content arranged across four key areas: support services, foodbanks, free and fun activities in Newcastle, the Central Coast and Sydney, and COVID updates.

Vice Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky said that the win was fantastic recognition for a great, student-led initiative.
