Reducing Waste and Greenhouse Gases
For the Environment strand of our Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, we’ve focused on our individual impacts on sustainability. Specifically, the IDP team has made efforts to reduce both waste production and greenhouse gases.
We have committed to a series of actions to reduce our production of waste during the day. The first was our use of reusable shopping bags, which initially kicked off our efforts for the Environment Strand. Each team member received a reusable shopping bag, which we have used frequently on our grocery trips. We have significantly reduced the number of plastic bags that we use on a daily basis.
In addition, we have implemented a recycling strategy in our office. Not just committing to recycling, we have also separated and designated certain bins for both waste and recyclables. This has made it easier for our team to reduce their waste and we have ultimately seen an increase in the use of recyclable products. Altogether these efforts have both diminished the amounts of wasteful products we consume and made the team more sustainable.
In an effort to reduce our greenhouse gases, we took the approach to limit our light usage with the office. We asked staff to simply turn off the light whenever a room was not in use, whether someone was stepping out for a small break, leaving for lunch, or going home for the day. While this may seem small, the impact has been quite significant, as we have seen an attitude shift in using lights in the office.
Lastly, our team has taken action in reducing the amount driving they have been doing when going to work. Besides the walking, that has helped with our other CSR imitative, we have seen members taking public transport, biking, and even skating into the office as alternative forms of travel. Our team has been very enthusiastic about lowering their carbon footprint and getting some exercise at the same time.
