Doing my second semester in my second year at Monash, I am still amazed by new knowledge, new friends and new chances to develop my core skills and to keep up my passion. It is absolutely the right destination for me.
My name is Thien Kim Vu. I am from Vietnam I am doing Bachelor of Arts (Global) and Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in International Studies and Finance, minoring in Chinese. I am very grateful that Monash provides double degree courses. It takes me only one more year to complete two bachelors. Certainly a double degree course has helped me enrich my knowledge in a multidisciplinary way. I feel more well-rounded as I am encouraged to explore things from different perspectives. This course provides me invaluable chances to fulfil my intellectual curiosity as well as to prepare for my future career. Learning to appreciate the complexity of what is happening in the world and to be aware of humanity, cultural diversity and the global governance gives me advantages in doing multinational businesses in the future and in becoming a good global citizen. My lectures, librarians and my fellow friends are usually very willing to share their knowledge and to help me study effectively. As an international student who is currently speaking three languages and used to have a verbalising problem, these sources of assistance are very meaningful to me, making me confident and more determined to study well.
Studying at Monash is a very good experience yet Monash is not all about studying. After doing volunteering tasks for MUST, MSA, and Team Monash at Monash University during my freshman year, I came to understand Monash beyond its academic identity. I appreciate that Monash provides opportunities for achieving academic success as well as refining effective social skills.
This year, I am keen to get more involved and to make further progresses on my core skills by participating in these programs. First, I am chosen as one of the Ambassadors of Business and Economic Faculty. My tasks are: facilitating first year students and make sure that they have a smooth transition, representing Monash University especially Business and Economic faculty. One of the events that I honourably helped out for was The Monash Commerce Scholars' day 2014. I was also a proud speak person of the day, introducing the structure and the advantages of taking a double degree course. Through participation and observation, I learned about leadership skills and management skills from my peer ambassadors and my coordinator. Additionally, ambassadors can also assess special workshops and attend the ambassador camp. I really enjoy the time shared with other ambassadors and together we have learnt many lessons about communication, time management teamwork, leadership.
The second highlight of the year is to be chosen as one of the Pom dancers of the Open Uni Pom Team from the Monash Mystics Cheerleading club. We are the new team, yet we share the same passion and commitment with all Monash Mystics cheerleaders. We have already competed on behalf of Monash at two competitions. At the Australian All Star Cheer and Dance Winterfest, we got the second place in our division. At the Southern Uni Games, our team contributed to the overall victory of Monash in Cheer, Pom and Dance. This is the very first year that Monash has defeated other ten universities to become the champion at the SUGs. Therefore we are very proud and motivated to try harder at the next two competitions held by the Australian All Star Cheer and Dance Championship at the state and the national levels.
Finally, I am thankful to Monash for providing me an opportunity to continue my exploration of eye-opening cultural experience. My academic and social successes at Monash University encourage me do an exchange program in the US as the further step to make the most out of my student life. I am still waiting for approvals and I hope that Monash will help me make my new dream come true. “Start here, go everywhere". This is my favorite slogan of Monash as it assures that choosing Monash over other universities was a right decision.
