Australian College of Physical Education
ACPE is Australia’s leading provider of specialist undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the related disciplines of sport, dance, and physical education. As an independent tertiary institution located in the centre of Sydney’s internationally renowned Olympic Park precinct, ACPE attracts individuals from around Australia and the world who wish to launch or further their careers in the sports sector and its related professions.
ACPE was founded in 1917 as a physical education training institute for young women. The idea of establishing the college arose out of discussions between Evelyn Tildesley, Principal of Normanhurst School in Ashfield, and Frank Stuart, a noted swordsman and physical training instructor who taught fencing to members of the Russian and British royal families and who would go on to coach Australian fencing teams at the 1950 Empire Games and 1952 Olympics.
The college commenced operations at the Normanhurst School with an initial induction of seven students, six of whom were Normanhurst graduates. In 1919 the Australian College of Physical Education and the Swords Club were jointly registered – a connection that is reflected to this day in the ACPE emblem. The Student Learning Services (SLS) is a resource centre for academic and career-related skills that are essential to professional development and success. SLS staffs are committed to helping students maximise academic potential. Programs begin during Orientation Week to aid the transition to a tertiary-level environment, and regular workshops are conducted throughout semester. These workshops offer training in a range of skills, such as essay writing, academic reading, studying, time management, numeracy development, and verbal presentation.
