George Mason University
Mason is a young university that, in just a short time, has made impressive strides in size, stature and influence. George Mason, for whom their university is named, was one of the greatest of the founding fathers of the United States. Mason drafted the Virginia Declaration of Rights, which became a model for the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights. Mason started in a single building with an enrolment of 17 students. That was in 1957.Today, they are the largest public research university in Virginia with four campuses in Virginia and one in Songdo, Korea. They have grown to more than 34,000 students from 130 countries and all 50 states. Their commitment to serving their students, community and the world is having a measurable impact. Their university’s more than 1,400 full-time instructional and research faculty members are experts in a broad range of fields. Mason has three campuses in Fairfax, Arlington and Prince William Counties in Virginia and an international campus in Songdo, Korea. In addition, Mason operates a site in Loudoun County and has partnered with the Smithsonian Institution to offer a global conservation studies program at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia. Mason’s main campus is in Fairfax, Virginia, just 15 miles outside of Washington, D.C. The nation’s capital is easily accessible by car or public transportation. The Fairfax Campus consists of 677 wooded acres and is the principal center for undergraduate residence and life. The on-campus population is currently more than 6,000 and is expected to grow to 7,000 as new residential units are constructed. Their Fairfax Campus is also home to the Center for the Arts and the EagleBank Arena where numerous sporting and entertainment events take place year round.
