St Michael's Grammar School
The School’s history began in 1895, when it opened as a day school for girls. It was founded by the Community of the Sisters of the Church, a religious order that sent some of its members to Australia to work towards the further education of girls. St Michael’s has always been a caring and innovative school, from housing a lost dogs’ shelter in the 1890s to building some of the first specialist school science laboratories in the 1930s. The School grew steadily from its foundation until the end of the Second World War, boys had been admitted in Preparatory since 1962 and up to Grade 4 in 1976.Now flourishing as a K–12 School, St Michael’s is widely recognised as a centre of academic, cultural and sporting excellence. Yet while the School has grown beyond what the Sisters could have imagined, they proudly retain their values of dignity, respect, care and compassion.
Their teaching and professional staffs are central to the learning and care they provide to all students and their families. These qualities are nurtured by dedicated professionals, who are deeply invested in students’ educational success. The broadness, rigour and effectiveness of their teaching program make a crucial difference to St Michael’s students, who learn to make informed decisions about their future career under expert guidance. St Michael’s staffs are dedicated to providing students with every opportunity to flourish. Their exceptional employees are more than just teachers. Many of them have worked professionally in their disciplines, and are now bringing their expertise to the classroom and co-curricular programs. Their teachers offer comprehensive support for students across all areas of learning.
St Michael’s Grammar School is renowned for its excellence in teaching, learning and caring, diverse community, and creative and innovative environment. The School attracts the highest-quality professionals in both teaching and non-teaching areas, due to their commitment to developing and supporting their staff, their inclusive community, and their strong values-based culture.
