The official nickname for the University of Kentucky's athletics teams is Wildcats. The nickname became synonymous with UK shortly after a 6-2 football victory over Illinois on Oct. 9, 1909, on the road. Later the name Wildcats became more and more popular among UK followers as well as with members of the media. As a result, the nickname was adopted by the University. The University of Kentucky is the state's flagship, land-grant institution. Its mission is to provide education and research on behalf of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the larger world around them. The University of Kentucky is a public, land grant university dedicated to improving people's lives through excellence in education, research and creative work, service and health care. The University of Kentucky's 800-plus acre campus is located just south of downtown Lexington, Kentucky. Major routes into town are marked with UK logo signs leading to campus. The main entrance to the campus is Administration Drive off of South Limestone. The Visitor Center is located in the Main Building on Administration Drive. If you are driving to campus be certain to check their visitor parking information. Campus is divided roughly into three parts. North campus contains primarily residence halls. Central campus is home to classrooms and offices, the W. T. Young Library, the Lucille Little Fine Arts Library, and the King Library. South campus contains additional residence halls, athletic and recreational facilities, the Chandler Medical Center, and the College of Agriculture.
