What will you study?

Being a data scientist requires strong analytical and computational skills to solve complex problems. Most of the universities consult with industry experts in preparing curriculum before delivering it to the students. You will have a chance to study subjects like machine learning, data analytics, statistics, data modelling, business analysis, data visualisation, cloud computing, database systems, internet technologies, and algorithms; and if you are lucky, some universities also cover a few program languages.

It is very important that you go through each university’s program structure before you take your final decision. Some universities offers work placements, capstone projects or internships, which is a great value addition if you undertake a course with such a combination.

What exams do you need to take?

The program requirements vary for each university. Most of the universities in the United States prefer students to undertake the GRE/GMAT exams while many universities in Australia, Canada, UK, Ireland and New Zealand assess the students based on their academic background and may not ask for GRE/GMAT scores. Remember, English language proficiency tests like IELTS are mandatory for all the universities across English speaking nations.

Important advice

Pursuing a degree in data science requires a lot of preparation before commencing your course. It would be a good idea to take up some online courses related to Python, SAS, Hadoop, regression models, data exploration, hypothesis testing and spark before you apply for the course. This would help you immensely in doing better in your degree besides enhancing your employment and internship chances.
