Australian Catholic University is a public not-for-profit university funded by the Australian Government. It was opened on 1 January 1991 as a Catholic university, ACU engages in the Catholic intellectual tradition where faith and reason are compatible in education, and knowledge is cultivated in an environment that fosters intellectual freedom, personal development and equity for all. Within the Catholic intellectual tradition and acting in Truth and Love, the University is committed to the pursuit of knowledge, the dignity of the human person and the common good. Mission of the ACU engages the Catholic Intellectual Tradition to bring a distinct perspective to higher education.

The University has a wide range of institutes and centres as well as four faculties. Students can choose from hundreds of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Bachelor degrees, also known as an undergraduate qualification, are designed to give students the knowledge, skills and experience to prepare them for the future career. Postgraduate degrees can involve either research or coursework programs. Degrees in research allow students to focus on a field of their choice. Research students usually do not attend lectures or tutorials instead they conduct independent research activities and are supervised by a senior academic.
