Overview

Ontario Tech University is a unique, industry-focused institution in Ontario, Canada.

Ontario Tech teaches a wide variety of undergraduate programs, covering business, engineering, the sciences, education, information technology, humanities, energy systems and more. Established in 2002 with less than 1,000 students, today it's home to more than 10,000 with around 600 students coming from 65 countries.

All programs are career-focused, so students develop the knowledge and skills needed for success in the professional world. Classes incorporate plenty of practical learning, and teaching is informed by the latest research and industry trends. Students learn in a technology-rich environment, where they gain adaptable skills that employers are impressed by. All of this leads to Ontario Tech having one of the highest graduate employment rates.

Outside of academic study, students are part of a vibrant community where they can join one of the many clubs and societies, partake in university sport, and enjoy the many social activities on offer. There is also a strong support system in place where international students can get help with all university-related issues, from application and immigration all the way to graduation and beyond.

Spread across two campuses, Ontario Tech can be found on north and downtown locations in Oshawa, Ontario. Toronto is just 40 minutes' drive away, so students can enjoy the small, community-driven location of Oshawa as well as a vibrant big city.

Despite being a young institution, Ontario Tech has quickly become respected for what it does. Its Computer Science program is one of the highest ranking in Canada. Through encouraging innovative problem solving and use of technology, Ontario Tech has become a hub for future entrepreneurial leaders.

What's new

Virtual campus tours

International students who want a good idea of what the campus experience is like, but can't visit the campus in person, can go on a virtual tour. Covering both campus locations, the virtual tour allows students to have a close look at and gain information about different buildings and areas of the university. Designed to help prospective students visualize life there, the tour can be viewed on a computer or mobile device, for a fully interactive experience.

Leaders in emerging technologies research

Ontario Tech has received over CAD 1.82 million in funding for research into some of the biggest issues Canada and the world faces today.

The investments, announced by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, are a testament to how the university is committed to technological research for ethical reasons.

COVID

The university has provided students with a central hub for COVID updates through the ‘Ready for you' portal. Students can find the latest updates including return to campus plans, information on blended learning and financial assistance for students.

As Ontario Tech is a technology-centred institution, students are also provided with a Technology-Enriched Learning Environment. Academic programs incorporate industry-standard facilities, so students learn how to be adaptable in the dynamic tech world, as well as understand the equipment that potential employers are using. A feature of this is the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program, where students bring in their own laptops for the university to install top-class software on.

The university is made up of seven innovative faculties, each offering a variety of career-orientated, inspiring programs.

Faculty of Business and Information Technology

Students looking to study programs in business and information technology will find a number of programs that have a focus on the importance of technology in business. These are designed to aptly prepare students for the professional world.

Faculty of Education

Those keen on educating future generations will acquire the knowledge and expertise to be an inspirational leader in education. Programs prepare students for a range of careers, including workplace educators and virtual teachers.

Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science

Students can pursue a range of study options covering systems engineering and nuclear engineering, as well as the only honour's degree in the country that is solely focused on nuclear engineering.

Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science

Combining innovative ideas and best practices, students can study high-quality programs that are informed by pioneering research and curated to develop them into future leaders.

Faculty of Health Sciences

Those looking for a career in the health industry can gain a solid foundation in advanced clinical practice and research, where they will develop the teamwork and leadership skills required for a rewarding career.

Faculty of Science

Programs prepare students for the dynamic, ever-changing workplace, through an education rich in the development of analytical and problem-solving skills.

Faculty of Social Science and Humanities

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

To study at Ontario Tech, all students must be proficient in the English language. Those whose first language is not English, or who have not recently completed three years of study where the instruction was in English, must prove their ability through an accepted English test.

The following is accepted:

  • Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) – a score of at least 70 with no section lower than 60.
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – a score of at least 6.5 with no section lower than 6.0 (Nursing and Education programs need at least 7.0).
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) – a score of at least 85
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic – a score of at least 58.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet-based test (iBT) – a score of at least 83 (Nursing and Education programs at least 87) with at least 20 in listening, reading and writing, and 19 in speaking.

English for Academic Purposes

There is an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program available from the English Language Centre. This helps students who cannot currently meet the English language requirements for an academic program to develop their skills and progress into academic study.

Facilities

One of the country's youngest and most exciting institutions, Ontario Tech is quickly becoming a respected and recognised centre for excellence. Ontario Tech is home to a number of unique and innovative labs such as the Automotive Centre of Excellence, crime scene house, hacker lab, mock hospital, and the digital culture and media lab,

Extra-curricular

The Athletics and Recreation department has many options for students who are keen to participate in sports or general fitness activities. Competitive students can be part of the varsity teams and compete at a range of different levels.

Additionally, there's volunteering opportunities, and a variety of clubs and societies that cover a large range of interests.

Accommodation

International students will find comfortable accommodation that suits their needs at Ontario Tech. On-campus halls of residence offer a unique community atmosphere, that 1,360 students call home each year. Eligible first-year students have a guaranteed room if they apply by the given deadline.

Those who wish to live off-campus can receive resources and support from the university when looking for something suitable.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

To recognise the value international students bring to university life, Ontario Tech has a number of scholarships in place. These reward students for academic excellence.

Global Leadership Award

Eligible international students starting an undergraduate program at Ontario Tech can receive up to CAD 18,000 per year over four years. This is awarded to students who can show strong academic and leadership skills.

Awards of recognition

Eligible international students who have studied at a Canadian high school can receive up to CAD 4,000 in the first year of study. This is based on excellent scores in 4U/4M courses or equivalent.

In-course scholarships

Eligible international students who have already started their undergraduate studies at Ontario Tech can receive up to CAD 3,500. This is based on achieving a minimum GPA score of 3.7 in a single year of undergraduate study.

Students are encouraged to check scholarship availability and eligibility requirements.
