Overview

Australian Institute of Language (AIL) provides English language courses, so international students can improve skills and further their studies in Australia. International students can study for a:

  • Diploma of Interpreting – students develop language interpreting skills in dialogues and monologues, taking care of retention and recall.
  • Advanced Diploma of Translating – students can hone their translation skills, better understand the texts they’re translating and learn how to research and translate complex concepts.
  • Diploma of Leadership and Management – international students who want to use their abilities and knowledge in industry roles can strengthen enterprise skills such as management, organisation and communication.
  • Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management – students can learn how to apply their specialist knowledge with leadership and management skills in a wide variety of contexts where they are accountable for team results.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

English language requirements

All international students must demonstrate English language competency through one of the following ways:

  • An IELTS overall score of 5.5 or equivalent
  • English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)
  • A completed diploma or equivalent (and recognised) or above delivered in English, covering any discipline.
  • International students applying to the Diploma of Interpreting must have an IELTS overall 6.0 (no lower than 6.0 in Listening & Speaking) to commence their study at AIL.
  • International students applying to the Advanced Diploma of Translating must have an IELTS overall 6.0 (no lower than 6.0 in Reading and Writing) to commence their study at AIL.

International students should also make note of AIL’s COVID-19 updates before applying.

Age requirements

International students must be of age 18 or above in order to enrol for study options offered by AIL.

Interpreting

Interpreting

This 52-week course helps students interpret from a source to a target language, in monologue and general dialogue settings. The interpreting takes place where errors and miscommunications can be readily managed through preparation and consultation, and where there are error correction opportunities.

This diploma is endorsed by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). On graduation, students are eligible to take up the NAATI Certified Provisional Interpreter test.

Course structure

The course comprises 12 units, seven core and five elective units.

Core units

  • Build glossaries for translating and interpreting assignments
  • Apply codes and standards to ethical practice
  • Prepare to translate and interpret
  • Interpret in general monologue settings
  • Interpret in general dialogue settings
  • Use routine subject area terminology in interpreting
  • Manage discourses in general settings

Elective units

  • Conduct oral communication in a language other than English
  • Use routine education terminology in interpreting
  • Demonstrate routine English proficiency in different subjects and cultural contexts
  • Use routine legal terminology in interpreting
  • Use routine health terminology in interpreting

Translating

Translating

This 52-week course prepares students to translate texts between source and target text, which may present the need for translating complex language concepts. This could be for an audience in a variety of sectors including marketing, commerce, health and medicine, and government and international relations (including immigration, science, the media, law and technology). Quality assurance is crucial, given that mistranslation can have major consequences.

This advanced diploma is endorsed by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). On graduation, students are eligible to take up the NAATI Certified Translator test.

Course structure

The course comprises 13 units, five core and eight elective units.

Core units

  • Apply codes and standards to professional judgement
  • Analyse text types for translation of special purpose texts
  • Negotiate translating and interpreting assignments
  • Quality assure translations
  • Edit texts

Elective units

  • Translate special purpose texts from English to LOTE
  • Read and analyse special purpose English texts to be translated
  • Apply theories to translating and interpreting work practices

  • Translate and certify non-narrative texts
  • Maintain and enhance professional practice
