About University of Rhode Island

The University of Rhode Island is a diverse and dynamic community whose members are connected by a common quest for knowledge. As a major research university defined by innovation and big thinking, URI offers its undergraduate, graduate, and professional student’s distinctive educational opportunities designed to meet the global challenges of today’s world and the rapidly evolving needs of tomorrow.

Whether students choose music composition, international engineering, or sustainable agriculture, the exceptional faculty at the university will inspire them to expand their vision. Students may live and learn abroad, immerse themselves in a new language, or pursue a degree that encourages them to see beyond borders. URI offers more than 90 undergraduate majors, 73 graduate degree and 22 certificate and non-degree programs.

Faculty are the heart of any institution of higher learning, and that is particularly true at the University of Rhode Island. URI is proud of the distinguished scholars and researchers who make up their faculty and of the excellence and commitment to their students they demonstrate in the classroom, laboratory, and in their role as mentors and advisors. There are 751 full-time teaching faculty of which 87% of full-time faculty have doctoral or terminal degrees. The URI student to faculty ratio is 17:1.

There are more than 120 student organizations at URI—from cycling and sailing to slam poetry and meditation. Students can get involved with the student newspaper or radio station. They can also develop their leadership skills. On-campus jobs and off-campus internships can open doors for students that they didn’t even know were there.

The university’s fitness areas, wellness resource center, personal training, and group exercise classes provide a positive outlet to support students physical and mental wellbeing. Nationally certified professionals lead its programs to encourage them to achieve sustainable dietary, fitness, and wellness goals.

URI is a Division I NCAA member and belongs to the Atlantic 10 Conference for all sports except football, which competes in the Colonial Athletic Association. It also has 18 club teams and a wide range of options for intramural competition.

At the University of Rhode Island—recently named #3 in Best Value College’s list of the 30 Most Beautiful Coastal College Campuses—the ocean is a big part of its history, culture, and everyday life. The campus is minutes from the beach, 30 miles south of Providence, 75 miles from Boston, 160 miles from NYC, with Newport just across the bay. The Kingston Amtrak Station is right down the road from campus, T.F. Green Airport only 20 minutes away, and for your Rhode Island destinations, RIPTA runs dozens of buses from campus every day.
