Griffith University’s Institute for Glycomics will share an important US funded grant, which is awarded by the National Institute for Health (NIH). This grant is awarded for a research project for the duration of two years and will investigate the role Vibrio cholerae (V. cholerae) plays in triggering widespread cholera epidemics.
Professor Victoria Korolik, who is the grant recipient, as well as one among the Institute for Glycomics’ research leaders, will be the project’s co-investigator in partnership with the researchers from University of California, Santa Cruz.
“V. Cholerae’s ability to cause infection and epidemics is tied to its dissemination and survival in aquatic habitats and its transmission to human hosts,’’ said Professor Korolik. He added, “The pathogen’s ability to form biofilms (where it collectively grows on different types of surfaces to form multi-cellular communities) is crucial for its survival in aquatic habitats between epidemics and is advantageous for host-to-host transmission during epidemics.”
