Selection criteria:
Students will be assessed on the basis of the scholarship application form, and in particular on their personal statement, as well as their original application for their degree programme.
The selected student will:
be strong academically and have a good academic record
demonstrate commitment, motivation, and be supported by the medical professional authority in their country of residence, to return to that country having completed their studies, to practice paediatric medicine at an appropriate level, especially at a grassroots level.
reside in a country which possesses a medical infrastructure considered capable of making appropriate use of the expertise acquired by the returning student.
An applicant's financial position and need may also be considered where the applicant meets the criteria above.
Where the award is made to an overseas student, the candidate must have already obtained the required level of English Language before applying.
This scholarship was established by Peter and Loek Wheeler, who wish to to enable students from low and middle income countries (LMICs) to undertake the MSc in Paediatrics and Child Health (1 year) or the MSc in Paediatrics and Child Health with Clinical Practice (2 years) at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (GOS ICH). These degree programmes are intended for professionals specialising in paediatrics and child health and is particularly suitable for doctors in training who wish to specialise in research and evidence-based practice in paediatrics.
Value
The Peter and Loek Wheeler Child Health Scholarship is an individual award that will cover the tuition fees of one student on the MSc in Paediatrics and Child Health every year, or the MSc in Paediatrics and Child Health with Clinical Practice every two years, up to the amount of € 32 000 per year.
The award amount will be deducted from the cost of fees at the start of the programme.
Eligibility
The applicant must meet the entry requirements for the MSc in Paediatrics and Child Health or the MSc in Paediatrics and Child Health with Clinical Practice, must originate from a LMIC (as defined by the World Bank), and express a desire to continue their future career in a medical professional or related capacity in that country. Applicants must have received an unconditional offer of a place on the degree programme before submitting their application.
