By studying at the University of Dundee, students will achieve an internationally recognised degree from a prestigious university.

The University of Dundee has an excellent reputation and in 2020 the university was winner of the University of the Year for Student Experience (The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020) and was ranked as one of the top 30 UK universities (The Guardian University Guide 2020).

Dundee is a global institution with over 16,000 students and 3,000 staff from around 140 different countries. The university welcomes the cultural diversity this brings and works hard to make sure international students feel at home through support services such as English language classes and buddy schemes.

The sports facilities at the university are of excellent quality and have been used as training venues by top athletes. The university has an impressive gym and swimming pool that students can use as well as specialised pitches, playing fields and sports halls. The University Sports Union has over 40 different Sports Union clubs available for students to join.

Classes at Dundee are taught by academic and industry experts, and the standard of teaching was recognised with the award of a gold rating in the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).

The university is noted for its research. The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (2014) described 76 per cent of Dundee's research as ‘world leading' or ‘internationally renowned'. This means that the university offers invaluable opportunities for those who are keen to pursue further study.

The Careers Service at Dundee supports students in finding a graduate job. Students can participate in relevant volunteering or work experience as part of their course. In 2017, the Careers Service was ranked 4th in the UK by the International Student Barometer. Additionally, 96.4 per cent of graduates enter employment or further study within six months of graduation (Destination of Leavers from Higher Education, UK 2016/17).

New MSc Courses

The University of Dundee has announced the launch of three new MSc courses within the School of Social Sciences:

  • MSc Psychology (Conversion): Offers a practical and theoretical background in psychology for students who have not studied the subject before. This course is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).
  • MSc Sustainability: This course looks at the relationship between energy, the environment and climate change and how they relate to sustainability.
  • MSc Human Rights & Conflict: Students on this course will study international justice mechanisms, transitional justice and humanitarianism, and research methods.

The MSc Applied Neuroscience programme will also have its first intake of students in September 2020. Students will be taught by clinical and non-clinical neuroscientists and internationally renowned researchers. Topics covered include learning and memory, neurodegeneration, psychiatric disorders, pain, and anaesthesia.

The new MSc Infection Prevention and Control Programme has recently been announced by the School of Nursing and Health Sciences. With the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic of 2020, the need to develop skills around outbreak investigation and management has become more apparent than ever. This new, full-time MSc will be taught on campus and is designed to enhance knowledge and expertise in infection prevention and control. Throughout the course students will learn from academic staff alongside renowned clinical experts who are leaders in their field.

Other course changes

The School of Business now offers two intakes across the year for its BSc Economics and BSc International Business degrees. The January start date is available for international and rest of UK applicants, while the September date is open to all applicants.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

Students at the University of Dundee can be assured that the standard of teaching is of a high quality. The university was awarded a gold ranking in the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and 76 per cent of Dundee's research was rated as ‘world leading' or ‘internationally renowned' in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (2014).

Students can access world-class facilities to add to the excellent teaching on offer. Facilities include a state-of-the-art library, extensive IT facilities and campus Wi-Fi.

Students can take advantage of relatively small class sizes with tutors who are available to answer any questions that they may have. As a result, students will have the perfect opportunity to get the most out of their tuition which will be tailored to what they need.

Dundee's students clearly agree that the teaching is of a high quality. In the recent National Student Survey (2019), Dundee was ranked in the top five in the UK for overall student satisfaction. It was also rated 1st in the UK for course satisfaction in six subject areas: children's nursing, dentistry, education, environmental sciences, molecular biology, biophysics and biochemistry, and physical geographical sciences.

Department structure

Department structure

The University of Dundee is split into ten schools, each one with a focus on a different set of academic disciplines. All schools have associated research centres or units. The schools are:

  • Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design offers courses in ten different art and design disciplines including animation, fine art and textile design.
  • School of Business this school teaches courses in a range of subject areas including accounting, business and economics.
  • School of Dentistry Dundee is ranked second in the UK for dentistry (Complete University Guide 2020).
  • School of Education and Social Work this school has two research centres: the Centre for Peer Learning and The Centre for Transformative Change: Educational and Life Transitions (TCELT)
  • School of Humanities – subjects taught within the School of Humanities include English, history and philosophy.
  • School of Life Sciences – the School of Life Sciences is one of the world leaders in biomedical and health sciences.
  • School of Medicine – Medicine students at Dundee have access to a range of facilities including a Clinical Research Imagining Facility (CRIF).
  • School of Nursing and Health Sciences – split across two campuses, Dundee's School of Nursing provides courses in adult, child and mental health nursing.
  • School of Science and Engineering – students in this school can study courses in anatomy and human identification, computing, engineering, mathematics and physics.
  • School of Social Sciences – this school teaches a range of subjects including architecture, law and politics.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Students can find entry requirements for all courses on the relevant course pages.

All courses at the University of Dundee are taught in English, so international students will need to meet English language requirements for their chosen course. If a student's first language is not English, they will have to provide IELTS results, with a minimum score usually of 6.5 or equivalent.

International students without an English language test score can still apply to the university, but any offer received will normally be conditional on meeting language requirements. This is to ensure that students have the best chance of succeeding in their studies.

Finally, international students who need a visa to study in the UK are also required to meet the level of English required by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

The University of Dundee recently invested GBP 1.4 million in a range of new undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships to enhance its commitment to attracting the best students to study at the university.

The university has a Global Excellence Scholarship to reward high achieving students. The scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate a high level of academic, extra-curricular or volunteering success and is worth up to GBP 5,000 per academic year. Other scholarships include:

  • The Humanitarian Scholarship – up to GBP 38,500 for any student with refugee status or humanitarian protection.
  • GREAT Scholarships – one student from both China and Indonesia will receive a GBP 10,000 scholarship to help with postgraduate tuition fees.

The University of Dundee provides top-class facilities to give students the best experience possible.

  • Accommodation - There are a range of undergraduate and postgraduate accommodation choices, the majority of which are on campus. All accommodation has shared kitchens and private bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.
  • Students' Union - Dundee University Students' Association (DUSA) was ranked 1st in Scotland in the National Student Survey 2019. There are more than 180 societies, so students will easily be able to meet new people and try different things. They can also purchase coffee, tea and lunch at DUSA, making it an ideal location for socialising.
  • Libraries - There are multiple libraries on campus for students to use. The main library has recently been refurbished with the addition of themed spaces, new facilities and a variety of resources to help with studies.
  • Relax - Campus also has an array of areas where students can relax including the Global Room. Here, students can speak with the friendly team who will provide information about exciting events including international film screenings and cultural events such as St Andrew's Day celebrations.
