The University of Dundee has an excellent reputation and is ranked as one of the top 20 universities in the UK (Guardian University Guide 2021).

Dundee is a global institution with over 16,000 students and 3,000 staff from around 140 different countries. The university welcomes the cultural diversity this brings and works hard to make sure international students feel at home through support services such as English language classes and buddy schemes.

The sports facilities at the university are of excellent quality and have been used as training venues by top athletes. The university has an impressive gym and swimming pool that students can use as well as specialised pitches, playing fields and sports halls. The University Sports Union has over 40 different Sports Union clubs available for students to join.

Classes at Dundee are taught by academic and industry experts and the university is noted for its research. The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (2014) described 76 per cent of Dundee's research as ‘world leading' or ‘internationally renowned'. This means that the university offers invaluable opportunities for those who are keen to pursue further study.

The Careers Service at Dundee supports students in finding a graduate job and the university is top in Scotland for the proportion of graduates entering high skilled employment (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2020). The Careers Service can also help students find relevant volunteering opportunities or work experience during their studies.

What's new

What's new

The School of Science and Engineering has announced the launch of two new MSc courses:

  • MSc Educational Assistive Technology – students will learn how technology can enhance the learning experience of individuals facing barriers to their education due to disability.
  • MSc Data Science (part time) – this course enables students to gain a formal qualification towards becoming a data scientist whilst continuing to work.

The School of Education and Social Work have introduced new postgraduate Master of Education TESOL courses:

  • MEd TESOL full-time – this version of the course is studied on-campus over a period of 12 months, starting in September or January each year.
  • MEd TESOL part-time – this version of the course is studied online (by distance learning) over a period of 36 months, starting in April or November each year.

The School of Business have also recently added three new postgraduate courses:

  • MSc Islamic Finance – in partnership with colleagues at Al Maktoum College, a range of new master's degrees in Islamic Finance and Banking are now being offered.
  • MSc Business Analytics – this new degree offers specialisms in financial analytics, marketing analytics and also analytics for management decision making.
  • MAcc Accountancy – this new Integrated master's degree combines a bachelors and a master's degree into one, in only 3 years. Accredited by the ACCA.

Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design have also launched two new postgraduate courses this year:

  • Art, Science & Visual Thinking MFA – this course brings together disciplines to provide an opportunity to explore the relationships between science and art.
  • Design for Healthcare MSc – this course enables students to learn, integrate and apply design skills to develop creative responses to healthcare challenges.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

Students who choose to study at the University of Dundee will benefit from an excellent standard of teaching across all of its programs and courses. In addition to this, over three-quarters of the university's research outputs were evaluated as ‘world leading' or ‘internationally renowned' by the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.

Students can access world-class facilities to add to the excellent teaching on offer. Facilities include a state-of-the-art library, extensive IT facilities and campus Wi-Fi.

Students can take advantage of relatively small class sizes with tutors who are available to answer any questions that they may have. As a result, students will have the perfect opportunity to get the most out of their tuition which will be tailored to what they need.

Dundee's students clearly agree that the teaching is of a high quality. In the recent National Student Survey (2020), Dundee recorded overall satisfaction of 87.4 per cent for full time students on undergraduate degrees.

Dundee is also ranked joint 1st in the UK for medicine, and in the UK top five for dentistry, forensic science, pharmacology & pharmacy and biological sciences (The Complete University Guide 2021).

Department structure

Department structure

The University of Dundee is split into ten schools, each one with a focus on a different set of academic disciplines. All schools have associated research centres or units. The schools are:

  • Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design – offers courses in ten different art and design disciplines including animation, fine art and textile design.
  • School of Business – this school teaches courses in a range of subject areas including accounting, business and economics.
  • School of Dentistry – Dundee is ranked second in the UK for dentistry (Complete University Guide 2020).
  • School of Education and Social Work – this school has two research centres: The Centre for Peer Learning and The Centre for Transformative Change: Educational and Life Transitions (TCELT).
  • School of Humanities subjects taught within the School of Humanities include English, history and philosophy.
  • School of Life Sciences the School of Life Sciences is one of the world leaders in biomedical and health sciences.
  • School of Medicine Medicine students at Dundee have access to a range of facilities including a Clinical Research Imagining Facility (CRIF).
  • School of Health Sciences this school is located in two campuses, and offers learning in adult, child and mental health nursing.
  • School of Science and Engineering this school provides programs in anatomy and human identification, computing, engineering, mathematics and physics.
  • School of Social Sciences offering a variety of subjects ranging across architecture, law and politics.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Applicants to the University of Dundee will find that the entry requirements to a course may vary depending on the faculty and programme type selected. Applicants should therefore check the specific entry requirements page of their chosen course before applying.

All of the course content delivered at the university is in the English language, so international applicants will need to demonstrate a minimum English Language proficiency as stated in their course requirements. For those whose first language is not English, an IELTS result demonstrating a minimum score of 6.5 is usually required. Equivalent test scores from other providers may be accepted in some circumstances. Students with no documented test scores are still able to apply but may be given an offer that is conditional on satisfying language requirements.

Finally, international students who need a visa to study in the UK are also required to meet the level of English required by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

The University of Dundee recently invested in a range of new undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships to enhance its commitment to attracting the best students to study at the university.

Students at the university will be able to benefit from the university's Global Excellence Scholarship, which recognises and rewards students for exceptional academic, community-based or other extra-curricular activities. Successful students can receive up to GBP 5,000 per academic year.

Other scholarships include:

  • The Humanitarian Scholarship – up to GBP 40,950 for any eligible postgraduate student with refugee status or humanitarian protection.
  • GREAT Scholarships – students from eligible countries including China, Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Pakistan may receive a GBP 10,000 scholarship to help with postgraduate tuition fees.

The University of Dundee offers its students outstanding levels of access to world-class facilities to ensure they can maximise their academic and research potential while at the university.

  • Accommodation – A wide variety of accommodation options suitable for students of every level, from undergraduate to postgraduate, are available on or near to the campus. All accommodation types are furnished with shared kitchens, private bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms.
  • Students' Union – Dundee University Students' Association (DUSA) supports more than 180 societies, so students will easily be able to meet new people and try different things. They can also purchase coffee, tea and lunch at DUSA, making it an ideal location for socialising.
  • Libraries – There are multiple libraries on campus for students to use. The main library has recently been refurbished with the addition of themed spaces, new facilities and a variety of resources to help with studies.
  • Relax Campus also has an array of areas where students can relax including the Global Room. Here, students can speak with the friendly team who will provide information about exciting events including international film screenings and cultural events such as St Andrew's Day celebrations.
