Australian Institute of Language (AIL) is a tertiary education provider in Melbourne. A registered Training Organisation and a CRICOS provider, AIL is situated in the heart of Melbourne CBD. The institute boasts impressive credentials: it is a NAATI endorsed course provider, NEAS quality endorsed centre, ETS TOEFL authorised test centre, AEAS official course partner and one of the largest official IELTS test centres in Australasia, offering both computer-delivered and paper-based IELTS test services.

AIL is a NEAS quality-endorsed ELT centre. Program information is clear and accessible and students can also make use of peer-based learning. All of the units are in line with current industry standards and are highly relevant. Teachers are well-qualified and offer students constructive feedback on a regular basis, which allows students to constantly support their learning process in real time.

Students can also access administrative support, should they need it. The AIL student support team members also offer support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The team is always more than happy to support students with any requirements.

The study options students can choose at AIL are:

• Diploma of Interpreting - This course is suitable for those who aim to interpret from a source language to a target language, in general monologue and dialogue settings where the interpreter is in a position to physically control the discourse to assist recall and retention.
• Advanced Diploma of Translating - This course prepares translators to translate texts with significant equivalence problems between source and target text, or if the the subject of the text has specific terminology, or there is a requirment to conduct extensive research and translate complex language and concepts. Assignments in the course may involve dealing with material which requires extensive quality assurance processes as the consequences of mistranslation can have far-reaching impact.
• General English - This course emphasises real everyday English for communication and helps build students' confidence and skills to function in an English-speaking country. Apart from honing the core skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking, the course provides students with pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar support.
• IELTS Test Preparation - This course focuses on the four major sections of the IELTS test - listening, reading, writing and speaking. Students are trained to achieve their desired IELTS score as well as develop their language and skills for tertiary education.
• English for Academic Purposes - This course aims to prepare students to study in an academic context, such as TAFEs or universities. Students work on all core skills and additionally study their academic counterparts, such as presentation, lecture note-taking, critical thinking, reading academic texts referencing and looking at cultural differences when studying in Australia.

International students must be 18 years of age or older to enrol in courses offered by AIL.

General requirements

• International students must provide AIL with identification documents from their country of origin (Passport).
• International students must submit to AIL the enrollment documents such as ELICOS or VET Program enrollment forms, as well as other forms required by the institution.
• Onshore students or international students who wish to apply for an extension must provide AIL with their current holding Australian visa.

English Language requirements

• International students applying to the Diploma of Interpreting must have an IELTS overall score of 6.0 (no lower than 6.0 in Listening and Speaking) or equivalent to commence their study at AIL.
• International students applying to the Advanced Diploma of Translating must have an IELTS overall score of 6.0 (no lower than 6.0 in reading and writing) or equivalent to commence their study at AIL.
• Students should have completed a recognised, completed diploma or equivalent delivered in English in any discipline.

Admissions pre-enrolment interview

Pre-enrolment interviews ensure that all participants are enrolled in an appropriate training program and identify any special needs with their individual learning requirements. Participants who require assistance or support with any special need, including LLN, can speak confidentially with their trainer and assessor. AIL offers assistance to all its students to gain competence.

Language, literacy and numeracy (LLN)

AIL applicants must demonstrate adequate competency in language, literacy and numeracy as part of the enrolment process. A LLN test may be conducted if AIL identifies a need to evaluate a student's LLN prior to enrolment. Additional LOTE (Language other than English) tests may also be required for those applicants wishing to enrol in the interpreting and/or translation courses.

Australian Institute of Language provides support to its students to ensure they have an enriching study experience:

• Students can access personal support from the AIL compliance manager or the CEO for personal/career advice and counsel.
• If required, students can opt for deferment of study, further student support service or go for a special consideration application.
• Students have access to support services such as practical advice on assignments, course-specific language and learning skills, and more.
• Australian Institute of Language can arrange for assistance for students with a disability.
• Australian Institute of Language ensures its students have the required training facilities, equipment and other resources needed for successful completion of their studies.

4-day ELICOS program

Australian Institute of Language offers a 4-day ELICOS program with five hours of study per day, available either during the day or in the evening to suit students' schedules. This flexible structure comes with benefits: it allows students time to rest, take on part-time work or explore Melbourne.

More LOTE Languages at AIL

AIL is excited to announce that it now offers additional Languages Other Than English (LOTE) for the Diploma of Interpreting and Advanced Diploma of Translating courses. The newly available languages include Mandarin, Spanish, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Thai and Turkish. Students who successfully complete either the Diploma or Advanced Diploma program will be eligible to sit the NAATI certification test to become Certified Provisional Interpreters or Professional Translators.
