Master of Science in Athletic Training

The University of Cincinnati Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) program prepares you for a fast-paced and exciting career as an athletic trainer (AT). This degree is the entry level professional degree and meets the eligibility requirements for both the national professional examination administered by the Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainers and the state licensure exam necessary for practice.

The program provides students with:

knowledge in the biomechanical/pathomechanical aspects of human movement and the physiological/pathophysiological aspects of injury and healing,
knowledge and training in methodologies used in the evaluation, management, treatment, referral, and rehabilitation of people who have suffered an injury or illness,
training in the skills necessary to recognize and reduce the risks associated with physical activity and sport,
training in the skills required to manage the day-to-day operations of a sports medicine/athletic training practice,
and basic skills in research design, implementation, evaluation, and interpretation.
This is a professional program of study that is guided by the Accreditation Standards for Athletic Training Education. Courses will be completed over two years of full-time study (six consecutive semesters). Included in the curriculum are intentionally designed interprofessional classroom, co-curricular and clinical experiences.

Students need to have: Completion of an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university; Minimum 3.0 cumulative undergraduate GPA.

Standardized Tests of English Proficiency

Most students fulfill the English requirement by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Testing System (IELTS), or the PEARSON Test of English (PTE). For IELTS, an overall band score of 6.5 is sufficient for graduate admission. For PEARSON, a score of 47 is sufficient. TOEFL requirements vary based on the type of TOEFL test taken, and scores are valid for up to two years. The minimum university requirement is: 520 (paper-based test), or 190 (computer-based test), or 80 (internet-based test).

Applications open on the ATCAS website by July 1. Applications submitted prior to November 15th will be considered for priority review and scholarship/financial assistance. After November 15th, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until April 1 or until all spots in the program are filled. Students admitted to the program will start the summer semester following their fall application.
