Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering

The Ph.D. program in Biomedical Engineering at The University of Toledo is a joint program between the College of Engineering and the College of Medicine and Life Sciences. The program is open to qualified students with degrees in Engineering or science fields, such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science.

UToledo's unique doctoral curriculum contains an entrepreneurship component something most biomedical engineering programs dont have. Students take classes from UToledo's top-ranked College of Business and Innovation and develop a business plan to commercialize their dissertation research.

The entrance requirement for the PhD program in Biomedical Engineering is the B.S. degree in engineering or in science fields such as biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, or computer science. Students with non-engineering undergraduate degrees desiring entry into this PhD program must have completed 1 year of engineering physics; 1 year of biology; 1 year of general chemistry; 2 years of calculus through differential equations; and at least 12 semester credit hours of undergraduate engineering/science course work (appropriate to the area of research interest of the candidate) to be considered for admission. Credit received for undergraduate coursework required for admission will not be applied toward the graduate degree.

To be competitive for admission, all applicants should have a grade point average of at least 3.0/4.0 for all previous undergraduate work and 3.3/4.0 for all previous graduate work.

Proof of English language proficiency: Required for students from non-English speaking countries. Minimum accepted test scores are: TOEFL PBT 550; TOEFL iBT 80; IELTS 6.5; PTE 58; and Duolingo 105.
