Wayne State has been an innovative urban center of higher learning since 1868, when a group of Civil War doctors envisioned a better world through better medicine. Since its founding as the Detroit Medical College, it has grown to become one of the 50 largest public universities in the United States, offering nearly 350 degree and certificate programs through 13 schools and colleges. From medicine and mechanical engineering to graphic design and geology, the university’s faculty members are renowned for innovation and expertise in their fields, crafting hands-on curricula to take students out of the classroom and into the real world. Student organizations use the Dean of Students Office to process their event planning and all students use the Dean of Students Office to learn about getting involved in campus life. The Campus Health Center provides comprehensive health care services for students, including physical examinations, family planning, illness visits, and immunizations (including flu, meningitis, hepatitis B, etc.). Visits are by appointment, but walk-ins are accepted for students experiencing an illness. Counseling referral services are also available. The University offers a wide and varied program of recreational and intramural activities. The Matthaei Complex, and the surrounding athletic campus on forty-three acres of land, located on the west end of campus, offers a myriad of drop-in activity areas that include courts and fields for basketball, football, jogging, racquetball, soccer, squash, tennis, and volleyball, a weight trainingexercise room, and swimming facilities. Theres no place on earth like Detroit. And theres no campus on earth like Wayne State. The university is in Midtown, the city center and one of the countrys fastest growing neighborhoods. On campus, students will find 200 acres of green space, walking paths and state-of-the-art facilities surrounded by renowned cultural institutions and industry-leading employers.
