The university has three modern campuses located in the cities of Auckland, Wellington and Palmerston North. Massey offers the only university aviation school in New Zealand, a pioneering design school and cutting-edge science and engineering labs. Social and extracurricular activities at the university provide the perfect way for students to get to make new friends and develop interests outside of their studies. Study options

Study options

Massey offers a range of study options from foundation through to bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programmes.

English language and foundation pathways

Students who are keen to pursue their studies at Massey University, but do not possess the academic or English language requirements for admission, can take up pathway programmes provided by the Centre for Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE). These courses enable students to develop the academic, English language, and study skills required for admission to university as well as for successful study.

Undergraduate programmes

Massey University offers over 40 undergraduate degrees, diplomas as well as certificates to international students. These programmes are delivered across five of the university’s academic colleges of Health, Business, Creative Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as Sciences. Bachelor’s degrees range in terms of their duration from three years to four years. There are also several undergraduate diplomas as well as certificates available.

The university is popular for the practical nature of several of its programmes as well as special expertise in the fields of Science, Technology, Business Studies and Applied Science.

Postgraduate programmes

Massey offers a number of programmes at postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma and master’s degree level.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Academic entry requirements for Massey programmes are outlined below. Some programmes require a higher standard.

Undergraduate entry requirements

For most of the university’s undergraduate level programmes, the minimal academic entry requirement is the successful completion of qualifications which are equivalent to the New Zealand Year 13 - NCEA Level 3 university entrance. International students can view the Academic Admission Requirements by Country.

Graduate Diplomas

Admission to graduate diploma programmes require completion of a 3-year diploma or an undergraduate degree from a recognised tertiary institution.

Master’s, Postgraduate Diplomas and Postgraduate Certificates

A suitable undergraduate degree from a recognised tertiary institutions is required.

Doctorate Degrees (PhD)

The equivalent or an advanced form of a pertinent bachelor's (Hons) or master's degree either with a first or second class honours, with division 1 (B+ and above) with adequate prior experience in conducting independent research at the postgraduate level.

English language requirements

One of the following for undergraduate study:

  • IELTS - 6.0 (with no band lower than 5.5)
  • TOEFL - 80 overall (with a minimum score of 19 in Writing)
  • PTE Academic - 50 overall (with a minimum of 42 in communicative skills)
  • CE – 170

One of the following for postgraduate study:

  • IELTS - 6.5 (no band less than 6.0)
  • TOEFL - 90 overall (minimum 20 in Writing)
  • PTE Academic - 58 overall (minimum 50 in communicative skills)
  • CE - 180

Massey University offers excellent facilities on all three campuses, from accommodation and sports amenities to libraries and clubs.

Accommodation

Auckland campus

The Auckland campus has the only five star Qualmark accredited student accommodation in New Zealand.

Options on this campus include:

  • Halls of residence: full or part-catered (18-23 years)
  • 4-5 bedroom apartments (21+ years)
  • Studio units: meals not provided (25+ years)

Palmerston North campus

There are a wide range of on-campus halls and units, catering for students of different ages, programmes of study, and cultural backgrounds. All options have the same resources and support available.

Prices are based on the meal plan, the size of the room, and the age of the hall. In a catered hall, meals are provided at the central dining hall. In a unit or self-catered hall students purchase and prepare their own meals.

Wellington campus

This campus has 3-5 bedroom apartments and studios for students to choose from.

The university’s two halls in the Wellington campus are Kāinga Rua as well as the Cube Hall. Both are situated at the very centre of Wellington and within walking distance of the univeristy’s campus and central city. The live-in residential staff ensure students join a fun and safe community. The team takes time to familiarise themselves with all the residents and offer advice on how to make the best out of hall life as well as studying at the university.

Libraries

The Albany, Manawatū and Wellington libraries are equipped with extensive individual and group study spaces, computer labs, book collections and cafes.

Sport and recreation

The university’s sport as well as recreation facilities are available to students on three of its campuses in Auckland, Palmerston North and Wellington. Facilities vary depending upon the campus but include cricket nets, basketball courts, tennis courts, an athletics track, rugby fields, fitness classes plus a lot more.

Health and Counselling

The Health and Counselling Centre is developed to offer students with an extensive range of professional as well as confidential health services. These are the services which are aimed to keep students healthy and active and enable them to achieve their goals at the university.

Every one of the university’s campuses have a committed team of professionals, which include highly skilled nurses, counsellors, doctors as well as a physiotherapist who can assist the students. It has skilled practice nurses who are available at any time of the day for appointments as well as telephone advice.

Student safety

New Zealand was ranked the 2nd most peaceful country in the world in the 2017 Global Peace Index.

Massey University adheres to New Zealand’s code of practice for the care of international students. It has dedicated international student support offices on each campus where students can get help and guidance.

Massey University began in 1927 as a small agricultural college in Palmerston North. Massey has a long, proud tradition of teaching and research excellence. Its heritage, geographic spread over three major cities, range of programmes and the flexibility of its distance teaching all mean it offers students from around the world the ability to tailor their study to meet their needs and at the same time connect closely with industry, professional organisations and local communities. Massey has more than 5000 international students each year from 100 countries. It delivers teaching programmes in seven other countries, and has international teaching partnerships with tertiary institutions in 15 nations.

Massey University's teaching and research departments are divided into five colleges. Theses colleges offer courses in more than 40 academic subject areas, by distance and at three campuses in the North Island of New Zealand. College research teams and individuals continue in Massey's proud tradition of research that contributes to economic prosperity and social wellbeing.

Sport and exercise programmes are delivered through a broad-based, multi-college, multiple-mode approach at Auckland and Manawat? which enables students to study as an internal or extramural student, or through mixed-mode studies.

Massey has seven student associations. Student associations aim to make sure that university students enjoy the best university experience possible. They provide leadership to the student body and are also student advocates to the university and wider community. Student associations are also responsible for running events such as Orientation Week and the 'Unity in Diversity' festival.

New Zealand itself is truly beautiful. It is renowned for its natural resources, its breath-taking scenery, its peacefulness, and the friendliness and hospitality of its people. The country is conveniently close to Asia, Australia and the South Pacific and has a reputation for being a safe and relaxing environment to live in.

Massey University?s innovative Auckland / ?teh? campus is located on the North Shore of New Zealand?s largest city, Auckland. The campus grounds are peaceful with many native trees and plants, yet it?s only a five-minute walk to the expansive Westfield shopping centre with its movie theatres, shops, restaurants and numerous fast food outlets.

The Manawat? campus is Massey's original campus. With lovely heritage buildings and park-like grounds located near Palmerston North city, it is one of the best places in the country to experience the real student lifestyle. With a huge portion of the population under 25 it is the perfect place for learning and living.

The Wellington campus is in New Zealand's capital city and is a great place to live. It is a compact city, set between a magnificent harbour and rolling green hills, where shops, exciting galleries and great restaurants are within easy walking distance. The Wellington Campus is centrally located near the city's artistic and entertainment quarters of Cuba Street and Courtenay Place in the heart of Wellington.
