What's new

Recent developments on campus include:

New accommodation

There will be 1,400 new student bedrooms on campus, and more flexible social spaces when two new colleges are formed. In addition, there are upgrades being undertaken to a number of colleges including updating kitchens and bathrooms.

York Management School

As the Management School expands, it is being moved to a larger facility. There will be more teaching and learning spaces, flexible working spaces and outdoor social areas.

New chemistry research building

The Dorothy Hodgkin Building has doubled in size with a new laboratory space built to house 100 researchers.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

The University of York is renowned for excellent teaching. It was awarded Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), with praise being given for the outstanding outcomes for students from all backgrounds. It was awarded 16th place in the Europe Teaching Rankings (Times Higher Education Europe Teaching Rankings 2019) and ranked 134th in the QS World University Rankings for 2019.

It also has an outstanding reputation for research and the expertise of its faculty in this regard. This feeds directly into the teaching and facilitation that students receive. Students will study and learn with active researchers on some of the most exciting and cutting-edge research. In the Research Excellence Framework (2014), the university was ranked 10th for the impact of their research and 14th overall in the UK.

The main campus library is the JB Morrell library, which holds more than one million print books, as well as journals both print and electronic. The library is open 24 hours a day, 362 days of the year.


Centred around nine colleges, accommodation includes a variety of room types and options to suit different budgets. Each college offers a welcoming and supportive community with opportunities for students to meet new people.

Sports Facilities

York Sports Village is a new GBP 9 million sports facility featuring a 25-metre pool and full-size 3G Astroturf pitch. There is also a fitness suite with 100 computerised stations, and spaces for classes such as yoga, as well as sauna and steam rooms.

Shopping and Eating on Campus

Campus is full of interesting places for shopping, eating and drinking. There are three supermarkets on campus where students can get groceries and university merchandise. There are several different scholarships available specifically to international students:

At undergraduate and postgraduate level, the university offers over 100 awards. For those international students starting university in the 2020/2021 academic year, the following scholarships are on offer:

Academic Excellence Scholarships

Offered to over 100 international students, these prestigious scholarships offer a tuition fee discount to recognise academic excellence. With funding ranging from GBP 2,500 to GBP 10,000, undergraduate and postgraduate taught students starting their studies in 2020 may be eligible for this award. Details on eligibility criteria can be found on the university's website.

Vice- Chancellor's Scholarships

Ten prestigious scholarships are available for the highest achieving undergraduate and postgraduate taught students. These scholarships are worth GBP 5000 per year for up to three years.

Albukhary Scholarships

The university offers five Sharifah Sofia Albukhary scholarships to undergraduate students in need of financial support to further their education. This scholarship is open to country specific applicants, and grants students awards ranging from GBP 31,250 (plus a full tuition fee waiver) to GBP 75,000.

Departmental Scholarships

The university also offers departmental scholarships which can be combined with the academic excellence awards. Information on availability can be found on the individual department pages.

Overseas Research Scholarships

International students interested in studying for a PhD, can consider applying for the Overseas Research Scholarship provided by York Graduate Research School. This competitive scholarship provides a regular financial sum of money in line with UKRI rate, as well as a research training support grant covering 100 percent of the student's tuition fees for the duration of enrolment.

The best place to go for support and advice is the Student Hub on campus. Here, specialist advisers can provide advice and information to help students manage their wellbeing as well as offer guidance and information on practical matters.

Academic Supervisors

Each student will have an academic supervisor who they can contact about anything they might need to succeed academically. They advise students on their academic progress and can help with personal development.

International Student Support

There is specific support available to international students, from immigration advice to assistance with settling into life at York. Students can join the International Students' Association to make friends from overseas, or join any of the over 200 societies on campus. The International Student Support Team can also offer support with practical matters such as access to healthcare and accommodation for visiting family members.

Open Door

Open Door are a team of professionals who are able to offer psychological and mental health support to all registered students. It is a completely confidential service and available by appointment.

Students' Union

The University of York Students' Union, better known as YUSU, helps students to make the most of their time at university. They represent student views and play a huge part in the vibrant student experience at York both on and off campus.

YUSU is run for, with and by students. They help students to share ideas, create change, gain new skills and access support.
