How to Check Visa Status in Australia: A Guide for International Students

Applying for a course or a job in Australia?

Or maybe you’re travelling overseas, or just planning for a visa extension.

In any of these situations, you’ll have to check your current visa status in Australia.

And how do you do that?

All you need is VEVO, the official tool to check your current visa status, expiry, work rights, and more.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to use VEVO step by step. It’s simple, accurate, and fact-checked by IDP’s visa experts.

So, let’s get right into it!

How to Check Your Current Visa Details Using VEVO

VEVO is the tool you need for checking your visa status in Australia. It stands for Visa Entitlement Verification Online.

It’s a free online system from the Australian Government. Here, you can see your current visa details and conditions instantly.

When Should You Use VEVO?

Use VEVO if your visa has already been granted and you want to check:

  • Your visa expiry date

  • Work conditions (like how many hours you can work)

  • Any other visa conditions that apply to you

If you’re still waiting for a decision on your visa application, use ImmiAccount instead. VEVO only works for visas that are already active.

Prepare any of these:

Before you check your visa status online, make sure you have your passport or ImmiCard. You also need either your:

  • Visa grant number

This number is on your visa grant letter. You might have received it by email or in the mail.

Be sure to use the grant number from your current visa. If you use an old one, VEVO may not display the correct information. If you’re not sure which number to use, visit the VEVO Request for Reference Number Form for help.

  • Transaction Reference Number (TRN)

If you applied for your visa online, you should have a TRN. You can find it in your ImmiAccount, on the page called ‘Online Lodgement Summary’.

  • Visa Evidence Number

If your passport has a visa label inside, this number is on the label. Not all passports have this, so don’t worry if yours doesn’t.

Step-by-Step: How to Check Visa Status in Australia Using VEVO

  1. Go to  Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO).

  2. Choose the type of travel document that you have.

  3. You will complete a form asking for the following:

    1. Reference type

    2. Date of birth

    3. Document number

    4. Country of document

  4. In the “Reference type”, choose from:

    1. transaction reference number (TRN)

    2. visa grant number

    3. visa evidence number

    4. VEVO password (if you have been assigned a password).

  5. Enter your date of birth.

  6. Enter your document number.

  7. Enter your country of document.

  8. Submit the information.

How to check your visa status for university enrolment

Before you can enrol in a program, your university will ask for your student visa status. And you're probably in this guide for this reason.

Now, you already know how to check this!

But wait—there’s more you should know.

If you’re checking your visa status for university enrolment, make sure your visa meets the requirements for study in Australia.

Once you’ve checked your visa status on VEVO, you should also look out for the following:

Is your visa about to expire?

Make sure your visa doesn’t expire before your course begins or shortly after it starts. Some universities may delay your enrolment if your visa is too close to expiry.

At IDP, we can check your visa validity against course dates.

We can also help you plan—whether it’s applying for a new Student visa or switching from a different one.

Are you on a bridging visa?

If you’re currently on a bridging visa while waiting for a new one to be processed, universities may need more details about your study rights.

We can help you understand the conditions attached to your bridging visa, especially if study is allowed. If you're in the middle of a visa application, we also support you with your paperwork to avoid unnecessary delays.

Are you switching courses or education providers?

Some student visas are granted for a specific education sector, like ELICOS, VET, or higher education. If you’re changing your course level, you need to make sure your visa allows it.

We can explain what your current visa covers and whether you’ll need to update it. Our counsellors can also help you with any paperwork required when you want to switch courses.

How to check your visa status for job applications

Before you start applying for jobs, especially part-time roles while studying, or full-time jobs after graduation, you need to check what your visa allows you to do.

Employers often ask for proof that you’re allowed to work in Australia.

Here’s what to look for when you check your visa status:

Work conditions and hours

Student visas usually allow limited work hours during study periods (e.g. 48 hours per fortnight).

If you go over this, you could violate your visa conditions.

IDP helps you clearly understand your visa’s work limits, so you don’t risk breaching any conditions. If you're unsure about the recent work hour changes or how they apply to your course, we’ll explain it simply for you.

Bridging visa or visa transition

If you’re on a bridging visa (for example, between your Student visa and a Graduate visa), your work rights may be different, and they can be hard to understand.

We help you check what your current visa allows and explain if you can work full-time, part-time, or need to wait. We also support your transition into post-study work visas like the 485, so you don’t miss out on job opportunities.
