Features of the 2025-26 WA State Nominated Migration Program

The WA State Nomination Program will continue with the same key features as last year. This includes:

  • Equal chance for all applicants, whether they are in Australia or overseas.

  • Priority invitations for applicants whose jobs are in high-demand industries in Western Australia.

  • Lower employment requirements for applicants invited under a building and construction occupation (based on the WA State Nomination Occupation List).

  • More flexible employment contract options for applicants in the General stream (WASMOL Schedule 1).

  • Priority invitations for building and construction trade occupations.

WA Skilled Migration Streams

The WA government can nominate you to live and work in Western Australia if you qualify under any of these two streams: General or Graduate stream.

What is the General Stream?

This pathway is for you if you are a skilled worker who has a job on WASMOL Schedule 1 or 2.

What is the Graduate Stream?

The graduate stream is for international students who studied in WA. If you’ve completed a vocational education and training (VET) qualification or a higher education degree in WA, you fall under this stream.

Sources: Migration WA - General stream, Migration WA - Graduate stream

Why is it important to know about these streams?

You do need to know which stream applies to you, because it tells you which occupation list and requirements to check before lodging your EOI.

In short, the list that you will look at will depend on whether you’re a skilled worker or a WA graduate.

  • If you’re a skilled worker, check if your job is in WASMOL Schedule 1 or 2.

  • If you’re a WA graduate, check if your job is in the Graduate Occupation List.

What is the WA Skilled Occupation List (WASMOL)?

Now let’s talk about WASMOL.

The Western Australia Skilled Occupation List (WASMOL) is a list of jobs that are in demand in Western Australia. If your occupation is on this list, you may be eligible to apply for state nomination to live and work in WA.

Connection to Subclass 190 & 491 visas

If your job is on the WASMOL, WA can nominate you for either:

  • Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated visa) – This gives you permanent residency if nominated by WA.

  • Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional visa) – This is a provisional visa that lets you live and work in regional WA, with a pathway to permanent residency later.

Having your occupation on the WASMOL is often the first step to being considered for these visas.

Schedules under WASMOL

The WASMOL is split into three schedules.

What is a schedule?

A schedule is just a sub-list of jobs under WASMOL.

What is WASMOL Schedule 1?

The General Stream-Schedule 1 is a smaller list and focuses mostly on health and medical jobs.

  • Who it’s for: Skilled workers with a job on Schedule 1 (minimum requirements are discussed later in this post).

  • Example: Maria, a WA nursing graduate → nominates a job in Schedule 1.

What is WASMOL Schedule 2?

The General Stream - Schedule 2 is a broader list under WASMOL. It includes health jobs, but also adds trades, education, and professional roles.

  • Who it’s for: Skilled workers with jobs on Schedule 2 (minimum requirements are discussed later in this post).

  • Example: Liam, an electrician in Sydney →nominates a job in Schedule 2.

What is WASMOL Graduate Occupation List (GOL)?

This list includes jobs that you can apply for if you have a qualification from an education provider in WA and you have a job offer in a “graduate-specific occupation”.

What is a graduate-specific occupation?

A graduate-specific occupation simply means that it’s a job you can only apply for if you have a higher education degree.

  • Who it’s for: for WA graduates with a job on the Graduate Occupation List (GOL) only (minimum requirements are discussed later in this post).

  • Example: Anna studied Accounting in Perth, so she belongs to the Graduate Stream. She checks the Graduate Occupation List (GOL) and sees that Accountant is listed. This means she can use her occupation to apply for WA State Nomination under the Graduate Stream.

Checking your eligibility for WA State Nomination

So far, you know the following:

  1. You have to know which stream you fall under.

  2. Whether you’re a skilled worker or a WA graduate, you will check if your job is in either the General Stream Schedule 1 or 2, or in the GOL.

Once you have done these, you also have to make sure that:

  1. You meet the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) eligibility criteria for the visa that you want to be nominated for (subclass 190 or 491).

  2. You meet the WA state nomination requirements. Each stream will have different minimum requirements.

How to apply for WA state nomination

Once you have confirmed that you meet all the eligibility criteria from DHA and WA migration, you can now apply for WA State Nomination. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Lodge an Expression of Interest

First, you have to go to the SkillSelect website. This is where you’ll submit your Expression of Interest. When lodging an EOI, you have to fill out different forms and:

  • Choose whether you are applying for WA nomination or another state/territory.

  • Show you are under 45 years old.

  • Have at least 65 points on the Home Affairs points test.

  • Provide a valid skills assessment for your nominated occupation.

  • Nominate an occupation that is on:

    • WASMOL Schedule 1 or 2 (General stream), or

    • Graduate Occupation List (GOL) (Graduate stream).

  • If applying through the Graduate stream, include details of your WA study (campus name, address, and postcode).

  • Show you meet the English language requirement either through a passport or a valid English Test score.

Step 2: Prepare your documents

You must provide documents that support your WA nomination application.

Examples of documents you may need:

  • Proof of WA residency (e.g. lease, bank/mortgage statement, driver’s licence renewal, or insurance papers).

  • Skills assessment results.

  • Employment contract (if required for your stream).

  • Proof of study in WA (for Graduate stream).

Important:

  • Documents must be valid at the time of application (expired ones won’t count).

  • Provide high-quality copies of the originals.

  • WA Migration Services will check your documents and may contact employers or schools to confirm.

  • Giving false or misleading information can lead to your application being refused and reported to Home Affairs.

Step 3: Receive an invitation

WA Migration Services reviews EOIs in SkillSelect and issues invitations to apply.

  • If you qualify for more than one stream, you’ll get an invitation for each, but you can only apply through one stream.

  • If two EOIs are ranked the same, WA uses the EOI submission date to decide who is invited first.

  • If you selected both visas (190 and 491) in your EOI, you’ll usually be invited for the 491 visa first (because most applicants score higher points for this).

  • You will not get multiple invitations from the same EOI. If your invitation lapses or is withdrawn/declined, you must lodge a new EOI.

Step 4: Lodge your state nomination application

If you receive an invitation to apply for State nomination:

  • You’ll get an email with a link to the online application form.

  • You must agree to the terms and conditions (including living and working in WA).

  • You have 28 days to submit your application.

Step 5: Assessment of your application and outcome

  • WA Migration Services will assess your application against the state nomination criteria, including stream-specific requirements.

  • You will receive the outcome by email.

  • If you are nominated for a visa (190 or 491), you cannot be nominated again in the same program year.

Step 6: Nomination in SkillSelect

If your WA nomination is approved, Migration Services will update your record in SkillSelect, and Home Affairs will invite you to apply for your visa.

Being nominated in SkillSelect means you’re now officially invited to apply for your visa.

Step 7: Lodge your visa application

Once invited, you must lodge your visa application through Home Affairs’ IMMI account within 60 days.

Step 8: Visa assessment and outcome

Home Affairs will check if you meet all visa requirements. Your visa is granted only if you satisfy every condition.

Step 9: Register your arrival or visa approval

If your visa is granted, you must commit to living and working in WA for at least two years.

  • If you are not yet in WA: move within 3 months, register your arrival, and complete surveys when asked.

  • If you are already in WA: register your visa grant date and complete surveys when asked.

Visa holders must live and work in WA for at least two years and register with Migration Services.

FAQs - Western Australia State Nomination Program

When is the next invitation round for WA?

Western Australia is currently conducting invitation rounds for both the Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) visa and the Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491) visa.

How often does WA update the occupation list?

The WA Skilled Occupation List is usually updated annually, but the Western Australian government can update it anytime.

What skills are in demand in Western Australia?

The most in-demand skills in Western Australia are in health care and social assistance, building and construction, hospitality and tourism, and education and training.

If you work in any of these industries, you will be given priority in nomination.

Which visas can I apply for if my job is on the WA SOL?

If your occupation is on the WA Skilled Occupation List (WASMOL) or the Graduate Occupation List (GOL), you can apply for either:

  • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) – permanent visa.

  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – 5-year provisional visa, with a pathway to permanent residency.

Can I choose between 190 and 491, or does WA decide for me?

When you lodge your Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect, you can select either 190, 491, or both.

  • If you select both visas, WA usually invites you for the 491 visa first, because most applicants have a higher points score for this visa.

  • You will only receive one invitation for nomination per EOI, so you cannot apply for both at the same time.

What is the points advantage of WA nomination?

If you get a nomination from WA, you’ll receive extra points on the General Skilled Migration (GSM) points test, which is the system Home Affairs uses to rank skilled visa applicants. These points are added to your total score in your Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect.

  • For the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190 – permanent visa) → you get +5 points.

  • For the Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491 – provisional visa) → you get +15 points.

How long does it take from submitting EOI to getting an invitation for 189/190

You can get an invitation to apply for a 189/190 visa 1-12 months after you lodge your EOI (depending on your occupation and points).

What is the process to get a state nomination in Western Australia?

To be considered for a state nomination invitation, your occupation must be eligible under one of the following streams:

  • General Stream: A skilled migration pathway for various occupations and industry categories. Eligible occupations are listed on the WA Skilled Migration Occupation List (WASMOL) Schedule 1 or 2.

  • Graduate Stream: A skilled migration pathway for eligible international students completing vocational education and training (VET) or higher education qualifications in WA. Eligible occupations are listed on the Graduate Occupation List (GOL).

These occupation lists highlight priority occupations for WA, making them eligible for skilled migrants through State nomination.
