About Bangor University

Founded in 1884, Bangor University has a long tradition of academic excellence and a strong focus on the student experience. Around 10,000 students currently study at the University, with teaching staff based within fourteen Academic Schools. Bangor University is ranked in the top 40 in the UK for research, according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014. The REF recognised that more than three-quarters of Bangor’s research is either world-leading or internationally excellent, ahead of the average for UK universities. The most recent National Student Survey (NSS 2018) results place Bangor amongst the UK’s top 10 universities for student satisfaction (excluding specialist institutions).

The University is made up of three Colleges housing fourteen academic Schools, as well as over fifty specialist research centres, enabling the provision of courses spanning the Arts, Humanities and Sciences. Students are enrolled on 324 undergraduate programmes and 125 postgraduate taught programmes. The University has a dedicated Widening Access Centre that provides a vital link between the University and its surrounding community.

Student life at Bangor University is vibrant and diverse. The university has more than 150 Students’ Union Clubs and Societies, covering a range of interests, activities and sports, which means there’s something for everyone. Student membership is free, so all the students can take advantage of the extra-curricular opportunities offered. University’s Clubs and Societies were named best in the UK at the WhatUni Student Choice Awards 2019.

Located between the Snowdonia Mountains and the sea, Bangor is well situated for all sports – especially those involving the great outdoors. The University has excellent sports and recreation facilities, made even better by a recent multi-million pound investment programme.

Students are given help and support from the moment they arrive. The Student Services Centre provides advice and guidance on matters from money and housing to disability support, counselling, dyslexia, study skills and local faith provision. Every year hundreds of second and third year students are trained as Peer Guides to welcome new students to Bangor and provide practical advice to help them settle-in.

Bangor has a strong research base across a spectrum of academic disciplines engaging in research at national and international levels. The University provides strong support for research activities including encouraging links with commercial and industrial bodies in the UK and overseas. It also aims to be responsive to local and regional needs and is particularly conscious of its North Wales location and role as a research resource and a training base for Wales. Research is carried out either directly in the Schools or in Research Centres and Institutes associated with one or more School.

Bangor is located in a breath-taking landscape with panoramic views. The location is probably one of the most beautiful university settings in the whole of the UK – situated between the Snowdonia Mountains and the Menai Strait.
