John Abbott College
Founded in 1971, John Abbott College is the only English language CEGEP in the West Island of Montreal and one of five English language CEGEPs in Québec. The college offers eleven pre-university and eleven career programs to over 6500 full-time students per semester, as well as a wide range of Continuing Education programs to 2000 part-time students per year. Its staff consists of over 600 faculty and almost 250 non-teaching staff.
The mission of John Abbott College is to provide an excellent education for our students within a stimulating learning environment that will enhance their development and potential for success in society. The college also offers Summer Language and Academic Immersion programs for international students.
Its outstanding academic programs and student services help develop minds, fitness programs and excellent athletic facilities help develop bodies, and diverse cultural and social activities help develop creativity and citizenship. In addition to having a dedicated and knowledgeable teaching staff and quality facilities, the college goes above and beyond by offering outstanding services to its students, and all this from a breathtaking lakeside campus, which is one of the finest in Québec.
Since its beginning, the John Abbott College has actively supported participation in sports endeavours as one of the important avenues in the growth of the student. The specific aim of the Sports and Recreation Department is to implement programs which will meet student needs and interests in the areas of recreation, intramural, and inter-collegiate activities. The department also provides for student involvement in the development and organization of these activities.
It also has Student Activities Department and Student Committees that organizes events such as Student Debate, a Model United Nations Conference, Winter Carnival, Multicultural Week and Homophobia Awareness Day. The student government, student newspaper, student radio station and over 30 student clubs thrive on campus with the participation of approximately 1,500 students who learn practical skills and develop lifelong friendships.
