Program News

New for fall 2021, the Media Studies program has undergone a few changes. The program name has changed to Media and Communication Studies and the five specializations have evolved as well. Students starting in 2021 will have the choice of specializing in digital marketing and social media, media management and analytics, multimedia journalism, public relations, or visual communication.

The Family and Community Social Services program has recently changed its name to Community Social Services. Same great program, just a shorter name.

Revised Entrance Scholarship

The International Student Entrance Scholarship is now ''renewable'' for first-time postsecondary students starting in fall 2021. Students awarded this scholarship will receive CAD 2,000 to 8,500 in their first year, based on their final admission average. If students maintain an average of 80% or higher, they may have the scholarship renewed and receive CAD 4,000 each year (for up to three years). Student Success

Staying in during 2020-21 hasn't kept students down. Guelph-Humber students are still successfully competing in as many academic virtual competitions as they can.

A team of 10 University of Guelph-Humber students from three different study programs made it to the final round of the inaugural Canada Comeback Challenge, a national post-secondary competition launched during the Covid-19 pandemic. The university is very proud that out of more than 200 teams across Canada, the Guelph-Humber team was among the 10 finalists in spring 2021.

As a result of the unique partnership of the two institutions, professors and instructors at the University of Guelph-Humber come from either the University of Guelph or Humber College. Teaching staff are industry experts, many of whom have completed extensive research. They remain active within their profession to ensure their knowledge is as current and relevant as possible to avoid sharing outdated theories or practices.

Professors actively encourage critical thinking, informed discussion and knowledge sharing among students in the learning environment. With small class sizes, students have the opportunity to interact closely with faculty, encouraging deeper learning. Faculty expertise is of great benefit to students who receive the highest quality instruction and access to the latest research, all of which equips them for employment in their chosen profession or further study.

Business

Students earn an Honor's Bachelor of Business Administration and a Diploma in Business Administration in four years. Students can generalize or focus their studies on one of six topics: accounting, finance, international business, management, marketing, or small business management and entrepreneurship.

Community Social Services

Students earn an Honor's Bachelor of Applied Science in Community Social Services and a Social Service Worker Diploma over four years. Students will look at current social issues and learn ways to deal with them.

Early Childhood Studies

Students earn an Honor's Bachelor of Applied Science in Early Childhood Studies and a Diploma in Early Childhood Education in four years, with a focus on the physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of young children.

Justice Studies

Students earn an Honor's Bachelor of Applied Science in Justice Studies and either a diploma in Community and Justice Services or a diploma in Police Foundations. Students learn about the Canadian justice system, law, and criminology.

Kinesiology

Students earn an Honor's Bachelor of Applied Science in Kinesiology and a Diploma in Fitness and Health Promotion in four years. Students learn how the body works, how to make it work better, what causes health issues and how to prevent illness.

Media and Communication Studies

Students earn an Honor's Bachelor of Applied Arts in Media and Communication Studies and a Diploma in Media Communications. Students can specialize in digital marketing and social media, media management and analytics, multimedia journalism, public relations, or visual communication.

Psychology

Students earn an Honor's Bachelor of Applied Science in Psychology and a General Arts and Science Diploma and can do an optional certificate in intercultural relations, organizational behavior or research skills and analysis. Students study topics such as development and ageing, learning difficulties, ethics, culture, neuroscience and abnormal psychology.

The University of Guelph-Humber lists country-specific entry requirements for international students dependent on where a student has completed their studies. To apply, international students would need to have achieved a similar standard required for admission to universities in their country.

International applicants should refer to the university's International Applicant web page to view all admission requirements. Each program has subject-specific requirements for which international students are asked to submit senior-level courses at the advanced level. If English is not a student's first language, or a student has studied the English language for less than four years, proof of English proficiency is required (students will be notified if they need to provide proof of English Proficiency).

The university has a wide range of excellent facilities for students to use across campus.

Sports

Students have access to the Humber Athletics Centre that offers varsity sports for the Humber Hawks and recreational facilities for team leagues and individual interests. Facilities include three gyms, a weight and cardio room, and multi-purpose sports fields. Students have the opportunity to play varsity sports for either the University of Guelph Gryphons (in Guelph, Ontario, off campus) or the Humber Hawks (on campus).

Medical and Dental Care

The Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre hosts the Health Centre, Counselling Services and Accessible Learning Services. There is also a Dental Clinic on campus.

Clubs and Societies

There are many clubs and societies for students to get involved with. These vary from the Architectural Design Student Association and Korean Drama Club to the Psych Society and Women in Business Society.

Accommodation

Students can live on campus in residence which is made up of three buildings overlooking the picturesque Humber Arboretum. Residence facilities include a laundry room, communal spaces and kitchens, a dining hall, and an exercise room. All first-time residents are given single rooms. Other suite-style rooms are generally available for repeat residents.

Rooms and Study Space

The University of Guelph-Humber offers a variety of study spaces including the Learning Commons area with individual and group spaces, quiet study rooms, and practice presentation rooms.

Library

The University of Guelph-Humber has specific library staff to assist students with library resources. Through the University of Guelph and Humber College, students have access to extensive online and in-print collections.

International Student Entrance Scholarship

The International Student Entrance Scholarship provides qualified students with tuition funding of up to CAD 20,500 over four years. Student's grades are converted to Canadian equivalencies for scholarship consideration. All international students applying to the University of Guelph-Humber for full-time study with a final admission average of 75 per cent or higher will automatically be considered for this scholarship.

If awarded this scholarship, the funds are automatically transferred into the student's university account in two payments. The first payment is made at the beginning of the academic year in autumn and the second payment is made at the beginning of the winter semester. Students will only receive the payments if registered as a full-time student in each semester.
