Based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, ranked in the top three best large Canadian cities to live in according to MoneySense magazine, this 53-year-old chartered university is highly noted for its academic excellence, small class sizes, environmental commitment and campus diversity.

Students attending the university can benefit from a low student-faculty ratio and early, hands on work and research experience. The university is highly accessible, with its students benefiting from the third-lowest tuition rates across Canada.

With nearly 10,000 students, 12 percent of which are international students from over 75 countries, the university nurtures global citizens of the future. Located in a city where over 100 different languages are spoken, students attending UWinnipeg can benefit from the local job market.

Focusing on a student-first approach, the university offers more than 400 high-quality undergraduate courses across 50 fields of study, several of which that are unique in Western Canada. The university motto is Lux et Veritas Florent, which translates to “Let Light and Truth Flourish.”

The campus is a mix of classic and modern, environmentally conscious facilities, and was one of the first Canadian universities to ban the sale of bottled water. The Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex features more than 30 state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories.

What’s new

What’s new

Over the last ten years, the university has invested more than CAD 217 million in the construction of new facilities and renovations of its existing structures, including CAD 66 million towards the Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex, which attracts more than 2,000 people daily and features more than 30 state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories.

UWinnipeg also invested in the student residence building and a day care centre. McFeetor’s Hall is home to 177 students and offers single or double dorm options, a meal plan, onsite laundry, and 24-hour security. There are also options for students with families. The UWSA Day Care, run by the students’ association, is one of the largest child care centres in the downtown area and has capacity for 96 pre-schoolers, toddlers, or infants from the UWinnipeg community and the surrounding neighborhoods.

The Buhler Centre, across the street from the main campus, is the home to the faculty of business and economics, as well as the classrooms for PACE (Professional, Applied and Continuing Education) programs, the Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art, and Stella’s Café.

The Axworthy Health and RecPlex is a multi-purpose sports facility featuring a large, multi-use turf field that can be converted into three cross-court fields for soccer, football and other field sports. There is also a four-lane sprint track, a gym, a studio for fitness activities, and lounge spaces for students or visitors.

Teaching quality

Teaching quality

UWinnipeg offers undergraduate students a large number of programs across four faculties. Arts is noted for psychology, human rights, criminal justice and theatre and film. Business and Economics offers a BBA with concentration areas such as accounting or marketing. Kinesiology offers a general stream or a science degree in athletic therapy. Science majors include biochemistry, physics, environmental science, and neuroscience, among others.

The university offers class sizes of between 30 and 60 students with an average 1st and 2nd year class having just 36 students. The estimated student-faculty ratio over a program of study is 25:1. UWinnipeg students have the chance to meet their professors and connect with other learners from the start.

These small class offerings enable more time for one-to-one support and the discovery of new people and cultures, whilst creating the perfect environment for learning. With 90 percent of graduates satisfied with the education they receive, the university's high-quality provision of education means that students have the best opportunities to learn and thrive.

English Language and PACE Programs

English Language Program (ELP)

These programs provide support to those seeking to enhance English proficiency skills. ELP offers short-term intensive programs, full-time programs over 14 weeks, the Canadian Workplace Experience program, the EAL Teacher Certificate program, or customized programs and private tutorials.

Professional, Applied and Continuing Education (PACE)

PACE programs are designed with student success in mind, offering a variety of post-degree diploma programs to students wanting a focused education on specialized career fields within high-growth employment sectors.

PACE students can benefit from high academic standards, a team of highly skilled instructors, and a curriculum that is industry aligned. Programs range from 12 to 24 months’ duration.

These programs enrich students with skills, knowledge and professional relationships needed to thrive within preferred fields. With over 450 internship partners in the city, students have the opportunity to participate in four-week internships*, putting their newly acquired skills to work.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

Students must meet the admission requirements for their country, as listed on the university website. International students must also meet the minimum English language requirements. If English is not a first language, or students do not come from an English-speaking country, provision of one of the following supporting documents must be made during the application process:

Undergraduate

  • TOEFL- Internet-based applicants must achieve a minimum score of 86, with no less than 20 in each component.
  • CanTest- an average score of 4.5 in listening and reading, and a score of 4.0 in writing.
  • IELTS- a minimum band score of 6.5 based on an academic module
  • English Language Program at UWinnipeg: Successful completion of Academic Level 5
  • CAE- minimum grade C
  • CPE- minimum score of C

PACE

International students are required to hold a minimum of an undergraduate degree, of which a cumulative grade point average or final percentage will be assessed for eligibility.

Students wishing to apply for a financial management are required to have a business or related bachelor's degree. Students applying for network security or web development require either a bachelor’s degree in computer science, IT design, or any bachelor’s degree with a minimum of one year’s work experience in IT.

For students whose previous education was completed outside of Canada, or where English may or may not have been used for instruction, students must submit one of the following:

IELTS - A minimum overall academic band score of 6.5 and a minimum score of 6.0 for the writing and reading categories.

TOEFL (internet based) - A minimum score of 86 with no less than 19 in each component (internet-based).

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

The University of Winnipeg offers students a number of funding and scholarship opportunities, from entrance awards to in-course awards after the first year of study. Students also have the option to work part-time whilst studying or to enroll in one of the many work-study or co-operative education programs.

There are five main scholarships that are awarded to International students:

President’s Scholarship for World Leaders

CAD 3,500- 5,000, this scholarship will be awarded to a new student entering the first year of a UWinnipeg program who has an 80 percent admissions average or equivalent and is involved in activities that demonstrate leadership.

Special Entrance Scholarship

CAD 1,100- 2,250, the award is available to an international student studying in Canada or studying a Canadian curriculum overseas. Applicants must have a final grade 12 admission average of 85 percent or higher and completed an application for admission before March 1st.

International Baccalaureate Entrance Scholarship

CAD 2,250 awarded, students must enter the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a grade total of 30, including the extended essay and the Theory of Knowledge course, and with no grades below four on the three higher level and three subsidiary level papers.

Advanced Placement Program Entrance Scholarship

CAD 2,250 is awarded to students entering UWinnipeg as an Advanced Placement Program National Scholar. Applicants must write five Advanced Placement final examinations and obtain an average of at least 4.0 on these examinations.

In-Course Awards

After completing one year of full-time study, international students can apply for a range of awards and scholarships for continuing students.

The University of Winnipeg received its charter in 1967 but its roots date back more than 145 years. The founding colleges were Manitoba College (1871), and Wesley College (1888), which merged to form United College in 1938. The University is a dynamic campus and a downtown hub that connects people from diverse cultures and nurtures global citizens. It offers high-quality undergraduate and graduate programs including several that are unique in Western Canada, for example, a Bachelor of Arts in Human Rights, and a Master?s degree in Development Practice with a focus on Indigenous Development.

There are five faculties, Arts, Business, Education, Kinesiology, Science, offering 3-Year, 4-Year, and Honours Bachelor Degrees. Students can also enrol in applied and joint programs as well as unique pre-professional streams that provide students with the preparatory courses needed to fulfil the admission requirements for such areas as Medicine, Law, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Optometry, and Journalism. At the University of Winnipeg, intramural sports will enhance the university experience for all students, faculty, and staff by organizing fun and safe recreational activities.
