Whitireia and WelTec have a long and distinguished history. The institutions are known for their high student success rates and culturally diverse student body. Every year, they train over 8,000 students across their campuses in the Wellington region.
Whitireia and WelTec offer a wide range of programmes at certificate, diploma, degree, postgraduate and master’s levels. Their programmes are developed in conjunction with industry to provide excellent vocational qualifications that are future-focused and equip students with practical skills to pursue their career goals.
Whitireia is named after the Whitireia maunga (mountain) of Titahi Bay, which is significant to Ngāti Toa Rangatira and is the highest mountain within their rohe.
WelTec is one of New Zealand’s oldest tertiary education institutions and the second-oldest in Wellington. Established in 1904 as Petone Technical School, it initially offered evening classes in rented accommodation. In 1908, it moved to its current site in Petone, where it provided technical skills training to high school students during the day and part-time courses in the evening.
Over the years, the institution underwent several changes in name, location and structure and was known as Petone Technical College, Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College, Petone Technical Institute and Hutt Valley Polytechnic. WelTec later expanded its operations and programmes, including delivery in Auckland, strengthening its position as a leading provider of vocational and skills-based education in New Zealand.
