It is constantly developing as an institution and was ranked 7th in the UK and 1st in Wales (Uni Compare Top 100 University Rankings).

A leader in supporting students in their job search, the institution came in at number one out of 159 universities for its Career Services. Alongside its award-winning Careers Team, Cardiff Metropolitan also provides a number of work placements and study visits to well-known companies to ensure that its students are ready for the world of work after graduation.

The university has an international reputation for providing outstanding professional and vocational degrees, and supports this with high-quality research that addresses real-world problems, such as medical provision in Rural Zambia and the advancement of surgical procedures.

Cardiff Met takes great pride in its teaching standards and has a Learning and Teaching Development Unit to help improve student learning, so that it is the best it can possibly be.

Cardiff Metropolitan prides itself on being a welcoming environment for students. The university has been ranked as number one in the UK for overall international student support for an incredible six years running, with students enrolled from 143 different countries.

The university does everything it can to ensure, that its courses are industry-focused, and utilises links to over 5,000 companies to help develop students into successful and skilled graduate employees. This is evidenced by the fact that a huge 95% of Cardiff Met students are employed or engaged in further study within six months of graduation.

What's new

Cardiff Metropolitan recently launched its new Global Engagement Graduate Skills Award for international students. The award provides a variety of options designed to help support students throughout their studies and as they embark on their careers, including help with applying for a graduate route visa and internship opportunities. There is also the option to win a graduate route visa application fee waiver worth £700 for students who satisfactorily complete all their course modules.

The university has also climbed the league tables in both the Complete University Guide and the Guardian University Guide, reflecting high levels of graduate employment, research quality and student satisfaction. It has also been recognised on the International stage, receiving the Comprehensive Internationalisation Badge from the International Association of Universities.

Closer to home, the university has continued its commitment to sustainability. Cardiff Metropolitan has been named the best university in Wales, and 8th in the UK for sustainability in the annual People and Planet University League. This sustainability includes a successful commitment to using 100% green electricity since October 2017, generated entirely from renewable sources such as wind, photovoltaic and landfill and biomass gasses.

Academic standards and quality

The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), the independent body entrusted with monitoring and advising on standards and quality in UK higher education, has confirmed that the academic standards and quality of provision at Cardiff Metropolitan University meets UK expectations.

The QAA's Institutional Review Report identifies areas of good practice across the university, which are:

  • The work of the Learning and Teaching Development Unit (LTDU) in providing a comprehensive range of opportunities and resources for enhancement of learning and teaching.
  • The Students' Union's engagement with students in collaborative partnerships to enhance the quality of representation.
  • The Your Career online learning object, which supplies careers advice and a flexible learning instrument for careers development modules.

Learning and teaching development unit

The LTDU is a central unit based at the ​Llandaff Campus. It works as a team to develop, support and enhance student learning, with colleagues across the university, to promote the highest standards in learning and teaching. This is achieved by raising awareness of current issues and progressing the scholarship of learning and teaching. ​

Transnational education

Cardiff Metropolitan University has partnered with a number of high-calibre institutions in the UK and internationally. Partners of Cardiff Metropolitan include the East Asia Institute of Management and the Universal Business School.

All of the university's schools specialise in courses that are career orientated and have been designed in conjunction with business and industry practice. Cardiff Metropolitan University consists of the following academic schools:

Cardiff School of Art & Design

In the School of Art & Design, the courses have been designed to enable students to choose how they want their talent to develop. Students can elect a business focus for their work, and concentrate on exploring the cutting edge techniques and styles of their chosen subject, or challenge themselves to take their work to new heights in completely new directions. The school has workshops and extensive studio space for students to use, ensuring they can work as professionals from the very start of their studies.

Cardiff School of Education & Social Policy

Located on the Cyncoed and Llandaff campus, the school is split into 3 departments: Humanities, Professional Development and Initial Teacher Education. With a reputation for excellence worldwide, the school has been instructing Initial Teacher Education for over 60 years. The school is built of over 90 full time teaching staff, and visiting lecturers who are experts in their fields

Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences

Based across both of the university campuses, Cardiff Metropolitan continues to improve the study of Sport and Health Sciences. The Cyncoed campus is solely devoted to Sport and Health Science and boasts state-of-the-art facilities for students to learn and develop their skills. The school continues to advance its current expertise, whilst also creating new collaborations between sport and health.

Cardiff School of Management

Based in the heart of Cardiff, the School of Management offers a wide range of programmes carefully designed to help students to develop skills and knowledge most desired by employers. Students are supported to gain independence and confidence, and encouraged to make things happen!

Cardiff School of Technologies

Launched in 2018, the School of Technologies works carefully with companies and employers across the tech industry to create courses of study that meet the student demand and employer need in the sector. The school consists of leading lecturers and researchers in software engineering, digital design and development and computer science.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

The International Office at Cardiff Metropolitan has extensive knowledge of all levels of International Qualification and offers guidance to individual students looking to join the university. The entry requirements are competitive and fair. The exact requirements for each course can be found on each of the course profiles, and country-specific guidance can be found on the Country Specific Information pages of the university website.

As well as academic entry requirements, Cardiff Metropolitan University accepts a number of different English Language qualifications. Apart from the Secure English Language Tests (SELTS) which are supported by the UKVI for entry to the UK, the university offers a number of different English Language assessments methods. These include exemptions for students who have specific English Language Exams at School in their Home Country, and also the Cardiff Met Global English Testing Services (GETS) Test in place of an external English Language Test.

The GETS Higher allows students to demonstrate that they are of a B2 level in all key language components. Successful completion of the GETS Higher meets the English Language Requirements for Cardiff Metropolitan University undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Scholarships & funding

Scholarships & funding

Cardiff Metropolitan University believes all students deserve the opportunity to enhance their career prospects, irrespective of their financial situation. All international students paying the full fee are automatically eligible and considered for the university's scholarships.

The university offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships to support international students, including:

  • Undergraduate Scholarship worth GBP 1,200.
  • MBA Scholarship based on academic and/or professional work experience, which amounts to about GBP 1,500.
  • The Vice-Chancellor Scholarship of GBP 1,500 is awarded to a number of the Master of Arts and Master of Science programmes, based on the academic merits and/or work experience of the students.
  • Cardiff Met Sanctuary Award provides a scholarship opportunity for students who are seeking sanctuary in the UK and wish to study a postgraduate programme.

The university also offers regional and country specific scholarships to support students further.

Students from South East Asia can also access the Cardiff Met South East Asia Scholarship. Awarded to the highest scoring applicants, this scholarship offers a 50 percent discount across any taught undergraduate or postgraduate programmes which start in September 2020.

Graduate outcomes

Cardiff Met University believes that employability means developing students to be able manage their own career path, making a positive contribution to the economy and society. The university works in partnership with the students to install the Cardiff Met EDGE. The EDGE is a series of Ethical, Digital, Global and Entrepreneurial skills designed to enhance student's confidence, resilience and experiences to prepare them for life after university and the transition into employment.

The university offers high quality courses that have strong links with industry, and gives the opportunity for students to gain meaningful work experience. There are also extensive opportunities for personal and career development.

With the help of the Careers Service, and the institutions focus on employability and graduate opportunities, 95% of Cardiff Metropolitan graduates enter employment or further study within six months of graduation, according to the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) Survey in 2016.
